The Halfcourt Trap for August 14

1. Davidson vs. Goliaths. Bob McKillop is one of the hidden gems in college coaching. He has kept his team in the upper echelon of the Southern Conference consistently. Now, he is trying to take them big time. Stephen Curry & Co. will play UCLA, North Carolina, Duke, and NC State. A win in any of those games will put Davidson on the same path Winthrop followed to the second round of the NCAA tourney last year.
How would you rate Davidson's chances in each of those games?

Against UCLA and UNC, they have no shot.

Against Duke, they have a shot to keep it close but I don't think they can win.

Against NC State, they have a legit shot. State is good and well-coached under Sidney Lowe, but the talent is overwhelming. If Davidson comes to play, they have a shot.

This alum would like to know as well, although I think the chances are slim in all of those games. Davidson plays gritty tough D and returns every single player from last year. Still, they're not nearly as big or quick as these other teams, so if they're not shooting well, their chances drop precipitously.

I'd love nothing more than to upset the Dukies, but I think they will be much improved over last season. I also think NC State is on the rise, and UNC and UCLA are always tough. Probably their best chance at an upset is State.

For a school with an enrollment around 1,600, however, they make me plenty proud.

It's amazing someone else hasn't scooped Bob McKillop up, that guy does an amazing job with such a small school.

no shot aginst duke??? Not even alittle?? I know that its a duke down year coming up, and even in a down year in duke they compete at high levels, but I would give them a legit shot in that one as well.

Several have tried, including St. John's (that was what we heard when I was there in the mid-90s). But I think he's happy there. It's not a bad gig, really - great town, good conference, he probably has the control he wants, good kids to coach, and his children can attend any number of schools tuition free, I believe. These days that's a lot of $$.

1. St. John's passed on McKillop twice. It was a terrible error in judgment both times.
2. I think your assessment of his situation is spot on.

He must be happy in that area, and good for him. I am originally from that area and I can see why he's happy there, good part of the country to live in, and a great institution to be associated with.

I am originally from Albemarle, about an hour east of Charlotte, but spent a lot of time in the Charlotte/Davidson/Huntersville area.

And yes, I do work for Wal-Mart now in Bentonville.

That is a nice area to live in and go to school. And you weren't far away from Pinehurst (don't know if you golf, but that's about as good as it gets).

I gotta say, last year was a great basketball year for me. My alma mater made the tourney and gave Md a run. And my home town team played some great ball and was a blocked shot away from making it to the Great 8.

This year should be another good one.

good stuff on Davidson.....BM is sort of considered a local hero around here, very well respected. and i agree, i htink they have a shot at NCSU, no chance against UNC or Duke....though the Duke game may be a little more interesting than most think.....

good stuff about Memphis too.......obviously they've taken it on the chin iwth the CUSA schedule.....at least they're going elsewhere ooc to get good comp.

good stuff Hat.

It's fun living in Memphis now that they have made a resurgance in Basketball. I love the fact that now that they have become a nationally ranked team year in and out Our beloved VOLS found Bruce Pearl and our basketball team is a threat to their lofty goals...People think UT football fans are bad, You guys ought to try living around a bunch of Memphis Basketball fans....Two years ago when the Vols made the trip to Memphis to battle the Kitty Cats, You would have thought Bradshaw murdered the mayor with his gang banger comments... I can't wait until we whoop that kitty cat tail again!:spank:

They'll have a great shot to beat State, beaten by comfortable margins in the rest.
About what I thought, although I was leaning toward giving them a better shot against Duke than against UCLA and UNC.

Nice read, by the way.
