The Halfcourt Trap 8/27

Be sure and bump this next June when Harden is a lottery pick and Tyler Smith is at the back end of the 1st round.

Having been an ASU and Vol fan exclusively(ha) for the past decades, I can say without a doubt that watching Harden and watching Smith would lead no one to doubt who the superior player is: Harden. Smith has those gritty intangible blahblahs that inspire confidence and trust and a safe sense of hopefulness; Harden has all the stats and the slashing ability and finesse that actually produce aahs both from those seeking posterizing plays and those seeking steady game-changing abilities.

re: the idea that winning your conf. tourney hurts you more than it helps: this is one of those big mistakes that analysts make when they recall teams that won their tourney losing in the big one, and tend to forget the teams that fare well in both because there's less of a story there(for a similar example see: Horry, Robert; game-winning playoff shots; try and remember if you ever hear anyone talk about the playoff series where he shot 3 for 22).

In fact the seed bolster one gets from winning their conference tourney puts them in line to face weaker competition, which the numbers show is the best predictor for possible longevity in a tourney, not "how many days off they had prior to playing in round 1".

The fact Rivals considers Harden, Smith, and Jack McClinton to be part of the same player grouping shows why nobody pays any attention to what they have to say.

That's fair - they are definitely better NBA prospects. But I think T. Smith can be considered in their league in college.

Hat, there's two things that I have been waiting for with anticipation prior to the season starting.
1. Feedback from eyewitnesses on the training/playing of the new recruits as well as our key returning players.
2. Your season preview.

I've gotten the first, now I'm waiting on you, broheirm :)

SEC West preview this week. SEC East next week. Top 25 and full UT preview the week of the 10th.

That was the first year of the return of the tourney and they had a bizarre format where the 1st and 2nd place teams in the league got a bye to the semifinals. We finished 2nd after a six game win streak at the end. Then we only had to win 2 games for the tourney title (OT win over KY in the finals to go 3-0 against them on the year).

Since then the winner has had to work a little harder at it.

The format is the format, and winning is winning. Tennessee did what it had to do in 1979. It hasn't since.

That they did. The stretch run before the tourney was the real "get it done" part and very pleasantly surprising. We all thought Don DeVoe was a real gift back then when he turned the same players from an 11-16 season into SEC champs.

With the exception of the Big East, I think most people would agree about what the best jobs in each of the other conferences are.
