The Good...
-The officials allowed the players to look at each other without blowing the whistle.
-As a result, Stokes and Maymon put a beat down on the opponent; both with double-doubles.
-We once again got balanced offensive production from a number of guys.
-We played like the Tennessee I expected in the final 10 minutes.
-We didn't allow adversity to beat us down 13.
-Barton is a MAJOR upgrade at PG.
-FTs started rocky, but finished very respectable.
-Team defense in 2nd half held USCU to 27% and 0-7 from 3.
-Only 5 TOs.
-We actually saw some movement offensively, some cuts to the basket, and some kickouts to open shooters. We saw little of that vs Xavier.

The Bad...
-We outrebounded them by 9, but the first half felt like we were killed on the boards.
-Torrey Craig is a really good player, but McRae's man defense tonight was awful.
-We came out slow against an inferior opponent and seemed to play down to our competition. That's on the coach.
-We still miss way too many shots in the paint. Stokes played well overall, but he was 5-17 from the field. Maymon 5-10. Almost all of those shots from inside three feet.
-We let USCU shoot 62% from the field in the 1st half, which led to our deficit.

Overall, good to get the first win, even if in unimpressive fashion. I still feel we can, and must play better. I felt like there were adjustments made from the first game from a coaching standpoint and the more relaxed officiating played into our hands. I'm concerned that we played down again as if we expected to roll the ball out and automatically roll the opponent. That attitude has to change. A win is a win though. There were a lot of improvements from Xavier, even if we didn't carry the fight for 40 minutes.

The D definitely picked up in the 2nd half. However, the difference of 62% to 27% wasn't all about the change in defensive intensity. They just made a lot of tough shots in the first half.

True, they did make some tough shots.

I hate to beat a dead horse but I sure do miss Bruce Pearl. Will we ever get back going like that with Conzo?

Good point on McRae's defense. Where was he? Not to mention, remember when McRae was a hazardous shot blocker? What happened to him blocking shots?

The 10 point deficit came when Martin substituted and had 3 freshmen on the floor at the same time.
0 defense in that stretch.
Then it was catch up.
Got their defense going in the 2nd and a little more movement on offense.
Good early test, no matter the competition.
I luv Barton. no homo.

Richardson was the only one who could disrupt Craig. With McRae and Hubbs on him, he had a field day. Not sure why McRae was so ineffective. Seems like a concentration issue and not biting on the head fakes or overpursuing.

The refs kept us in the game the first half with free throws. Tennessee 15/21 upstate 2/2. We should have beaten this team by 25.

I agree that Barton is a considerable upgrade in the PG position. He is living up to expectations, IMO.

Agreed. Stokes was a big player this game - it felt like when he went out, we were instantly down 4-6 points. Maymon too, to a lesser extent.

We need a rotation of 8 (Thompson, Moore, Hubbs) or maybe 9 (Davis) players unless Stokes/Maymon are fouling out (then add Pops).

You forgot "the ugly". :)

How about...yet another slow start for a Zo team. He needs to get off the schnide at the start of the game and not the end for once.

I didn't see the game, but it does sound like we kicked it in earlier than against Xavier and overall it was a better effort.

Worried about Martin's sub patterns still. Didn't Bruce delegate subbing to an assistant? Maybe Martin can too, if he has not already.

This was a solid win against a good team and Greene played well for Upstate...... Now on to the Citadel.
