The fundamental reason why we are bad...

the cool part about being terrible is that there is no excuse.

when you are the worst ever, it's kind of hard to look over that. some defense back in 1973 (or whatever year) may have been on the field an average of 35 minutes a game and the defense wasn't this bad. some team in 1917 may have had more turnovers than any other team in tennessee history, and the defense wasn't this bad. etc, etc, etc.

in short, tennessee is this bad because a group of unqualified people are running the program

Troy had 30 pts before halftime. Just about everybody we've played has posted big numbers before halftime.

"We [defense] might be better if we weren't gassed all the time." Heh heh - great stuff.

If the defense can't stop them when they are on the field, I can't see that this makes that much difference. It's more about the number of plays each side runs rather than whether the clock ran a lot between the plays (we lost # of plays as well). If our offense had consumed more clock, it would simply shorten the game and we would have scored fewer points since we would have fewer possessions. Troy would have fewer possessions as well.

When we were down 48-41, I was sure glad our offense hadn't used more clock because the game would have been over.

Hey take a lesson from Troy. Didn't you hear the announcers talking about them running an octagon training program? If the D is getting gassed, time to 1) develop depth among all the guys sitting on the bench to keep the starters fresh and 2) go outside the box on strength and conditioning.

Yea that worked great for Troy's defense

How in the world does Oregon's defense not just collapse on the field every week ? Their offense really does run a quick paced game not like ours and yet they are not giving up 600+ yards every week. It's a BS excuse to say our offense is hurting our defense.

when you can't stop a draw play over and over again then there are more problems than the D being gassed. They ran 4 draws for about 120 yards. that is not SEC football, and Dooley is not an SEC HC.

It was amazing AJ fell for it ever time. The QB would step back like a pass AJ would charge up field an offensive lineman would block AJ and the running back would run right off of the blockers tail on the opposite side of the block and not be touched.

AJ always runs right into the blocker. There's no real attempt to shed the blocker or make the blocker miss him.

So you are saying the key to solving our defensive problems is to keep them off the field?

Dline guys just don't play with any awareness. They just run themselves out of the play.. Even when the opponent runs the same play over and over again.. AJ Johnson just finds someone to block him.. If the front 7 were better the db's wouldn't look so pitiful...

Understand that the "solution" is not to run a slower offense, just was offering it as a gameplanning variable that could be tweaked to try to manage the game such that 38min of D with 22min of offense was not the norm.

Definitely agree that our D is poor & we need to get our butts off the field.

We don't run a hurry up offense. We run a no huddle and the purpose is to keep the opposition from substituting. If we were running a hurry up, it would look like Oregon, the purpose being to get as many offensive possessions as possible, wear out the opposition by going at a break neck pace.

That to say this...The 90 yard drive where we took the one point lead, took 8 plays and 1:50 off of the clock. Had the offense snapped the ball with one second on the play clock, rather than between 15-20 seconds...we would have taken 4-5 minutes off the clock...the same 8 plays, nothing different. If you do that the whole game, the defense is on the field much less.

Obviously, things like this don't exist in a vacuum, but I do believe that clock management is poor. You can run the no huddle and manage the clock.

That's not what we are saying, our offense is great, they move the ball fast and score fast, if we were to keep our O on the field longer the def could get more rest, field position has a lot to do with it too, we start at the 40-45 we score in 4 plays! Run game run game run game....,
