The fans fired Fulmer(economically) now let's get Hamilton.

Our basketball program was not in a position to be able to lure a coach from a successful major school.

There's plenty of basketball coaches that would love to coach in the SEC, for what that's worth.

In March of 2005, or really anytime between Ray Mears and Bruce Pearl, I very seriously doubt that UT was viewed as a step-up by successful coaches at other "BCS" schools.

Now where does it mention UT in my previous post? For what that's worth.

where do you get this money?

money can't beat bama unless we are buying their recruits...

The money comes from the Haslems of Pilot Oil, the Bealls of Ruby Tuesday and the countless other filthy rich people that are alumni of UT. 8 million is a very easy salary to pay for the right man.

You get what you pay for.

the largest chunks come from the SEC, courtesy of ESPN and CBS.

Doug Dickey is reponsible for the sad state of our school's athetic department. Hamilton sees the econonmic side of things and not the buddy buddy part of it.
Produce and fill seats you stay, be mediocre and get fired.

You do realize that he didn't actually coach the team, correct?

Also, that was a pretty dumb post in general.

Your post didn't specifically mention UT, but you were quoting and replying to my post, which was about UT.

I don't see how your post could have been interpreted any differently.

Yes, he hasn't screwed up yet and I don't expect him to. The football head coaching job will be his biggest hire and define his legacy, I just think that he'll pony up a lot of money to get the one-up on Bama.

I just want to point out that this is a complete 180-degree flip from the post you started this thread with.

MH has shown his colors since his knighting as TN sports king.

Bruce Pearl, basketball, brought in from a mid-major basketball school, his success is obvious.

Todd Raleigh, brought in from Western carolina, no name school, his sucess has yet to be proven.

Next football coach, if history repeats itself, he'll be from a no name school.

My preference is to buy the Rolex and hire Gruden, my belief is that Hammy will hire the Cincy guy or some other no name.

This is Football, I don't think the majority will tolerate a "no-name"

I think lex said it best. I haven't seen a guy yet on any list that wouldn't be a improvement over what we currently have. If its kelly then so be it.

I didn't find the remark even slightly condescending. He's just stating facts of life.
I agree. The points regarding the raise and extension are enumerated in this article:
In Hamilton's view, the new contract wasn't a mistake.
"It was a result of winning the SEC Eastern Division championship, as a result of no raise having occurred since 2004," Hamilton said. "The raise basically worked out to an equivalent of five percent annually. We were still seventh in the league (in head coach salary)."
Hamilton added that it was not a new seven-year deal, but a one-year extension because the original contract had six years remaining on it.
"I think it was the right decision at the time," Hamilton said. "No one can foresee the future. You base it upon what was accomplished and what you think the future is going to be."

Let's simplify. You said Tennessee's basketball program sucked and therefore nobody would want that job.. I agreed but stated Tennessee was in the SEC and that alone made it an attractive job for a high level coach in and of itself. What we have here is a failure to communicate (Cool Hand Luke)
