To start off, I’m NOT saying we are or aren’t, in exclusivity. I think we all know that poor leadership has got us in many bad situations.. but I think it’s time we need to address the elephant in the room, or at least find a central location on here to discuss how/if/why since it’s seemed to have become a often hinted national narrative of the fanbase being toxic and “nuclear” as I’ve seen quoted after today’s events.

Some thoughts:

Social Presence - Having worked in the digital marketing space and being active on all platforms of social media, I truly believe we are the most fervent fanbase in college sports on social media by a large margin. With the era of “Twitter Mobs” and Group-Think, I think it’s possible this is something unique to UT.

New Media - Along the same lines, we’re seeing a decline in the influence of “state-run radio” in Knoxville with the influence shifting to a younger generation of mellenial fans that have grown up having never seen UT be successful - only having heard stories. Through Podcasts, Periscope, message boards, etc this younger generation of “fed up fans” is causing reaction similar to what we saw at a national level with Trump and “draining the swamp”

Expectations vs Reality - The top coaches we target have opportunities to stay at their current job that has less pressure / more security; or they gun for other jobs that offer a perceived easier path to success. The PERCEPTION of this job (whether right or wrong), make the job less attractive to the top candidates we want. Alabama’s emergence as nearly invincible as permanent rival doesn’t help as well as overall parity in the league makes our fan expectations harder to reach.
