The face of Tennessee football

Peyton Manning's name appears as much as it does around Neyland Stadium in large part because of how much money he has donated to the university. That isn't something you just cancel... because it feels like the right thing to do for recruiting. It's a silly and needless column. The only thing that really needs to change, is Tennessee needs to consistently win more games. That will take care of everything else.

Wasn't Kamara on Alabama sidelines a few years ago for the championship game?

Peyton was a great football player but the fact that he is still the face of Tennessee football just shows how little success this program has had over the last 20 years.
"The face of Tennessee football" is not even an actual designation. It's a slow time of the year for college football topics of conversation and it shows.

He would be like that for almost any program regardless of the success of that program. Not only because of his on the field achievements, but because of how much he loves the university and actively supports it.

Tennessee football doesn't have a face. There's no contest to pick a new face. No face-selecting committee. The university doesn't designate or choose or crown a face. It's not an official position, or even an unofficial one.

But we do have many faces. Every time the fan base falls in love with a player or coach, we get a new one. Yes, Ed, the General is a face of Tennessee football. So is George Cafego, though fewer and fewer remember. Doug Atkins is a face, a body, and two huge mitts of hands.

Condredge Holloway is a face of the Vols. And Peyton. And Tee. Reggie White is. Eric Berry, too. Derek Barnett is, quietly, a face of the Vols.

And I would argue that Alvin Kamara, yes, he is --already-- a face of the Vols, as well. Not sure what Zach Regan is getting on about, we already embrace Alvin. We have since he was a student, well before he became a superstar in New Orleans.

We embrace all these faces of the Vols football team. Some of them embrace back more loudly and frequently than others. Some prefer to leave their college years behind and focus on the present, or the future. That's their choice. But we love all these lads who played wearing orange and white, and we wish them all the best.

Face that, Zach Regan. We have plenty of faces. And we'll keep them all, thank you very much.

Is this from a "Joke site"..??? I mean is "Zack Ragan" a real person who gets paid to write garbage like this..??
If so...This is the kind of junk article people write about college football when it's March, and they've run out of anything to talk about.
Maybe his next article will explain how Green Bay "needs to replace Vince Lombardi as the face of Packers football".

The "face" of this program shouldn't be tied to any one player. Players come and go. It should be tied to...

1. A winning tradition.
2. World class facilities
3. A reputation for putting players in the NFL

That's it. Those are the 3 main things that recruits are looking for. When you hitch your wagon to a single player, it kind of sends the message that he's the only player you've ever produced of note. Can you imagine if Herschel Walker was still the face of Georgia's program or if Joe Namath was for Alabama? Programs have to move on. They have to move forward and not be living in the past. This has been a problem of ours for a while.

We(Butch) neglected AK by playing an inferior running back. That isn’t something we should have as the face of our program.

We won’t replace Manning as a legend of the vols just like Gators will never replace spurrier or Tebow.

I think that's what a lot of people are overlooking here. Yes, PM is a legend, yes he has done a lot for this program, but he's not paying UT to endorse his image. UT chooses to do so because it is proud to have "produced" such a person.

Everyone says win, but it's not just a switch you turn on. It starts with recruiting. Recruits want to go where they can win, where they can compete for championships, and be "produced" for the NFL.

Players want to go to a place they can be great. And so far, we haven't really produced any greats since Manning. That's what this author was talking about. We need someone of recent that current recruits can relate to. And as great as PM is to us and so many others, kids aren't lining up to come to Tennessee because we produced someone 25 years and 5 head coaches ago.

We need a refresher for the sake of recruiting and to get players attention. Someone that players actually idolize TODAY.

Regan is right, we should pimp Alvin Kamara a little harder. As stated, the #1 rb in the class of 22 wants to be the next Alvin Kamara.

And remember what Simpson said just before he committed to Bama? "I want to go somewhere, where I can be the guy, and not just another player on the roster". Let that sink in.

It's more of a "what can you do for me lately" kind of thing. Peyton will never be replaced, but we need someone CURRENTLY we can attach this university to
