Fulmer took a gamble with the extension...

You’ve got a team that botched the beginning of the year (2019) and then turned things around, finished strong and eeekd out a bowl win vs. Indiana. Resilient ending to what started out as a nightmare season.

The extension was meant to boost confidence in the direction of the program AND help with recruiting. It’s difficult to pick up players when there is uncertainty in the coaching staff. A stable coach situation goes a long way in someone’s living room.

And it worked! Early in this wacky season the vols found themselves with a top 3 recruiting class.

Unfortunately, the gamble has backfired. After showing complete ineptitude, an inability to adjust at the half (out scored 78-7 in the third quarter) constant QB woes, terrible play on all facets of the game and a lackluster spark, now we are stuck with a discontented fan base, decommitting players, and a bill that’s out of reason to fix the problem.

Tennessee Groundhog Day.

It was dumb. Never give your a coach an extension if no one is calling and trying to hire him away. Common sense

I don’t get the extension. He hasn’t done anything yet.

And he signed a 5 year contract. How does an extension boost recruiting or show confidence a coach is going to stay with the program if he already has 3 years remaining on his contract? The extension was dumb as hell plus we got hustled with the 0% mitigation language...

Contract Extensions, ESPECIALLY when it's an individual in his first power 5 HC job...should be given with performance riders and said coach surrenders the MILLIONS in "Buyout cash" that's being guaranteed in these ridiculous HC contracts. How's about we get something on our side of the table..?? There are power 5 coaches out there who have PROVEN themselves able to build and maintain a consistent top 10 program. Those individuals can hold out for all those high dollar contracts, extensions, guarantees, and buyouts. I get that.
What I don't get is the willingness of AD's to throw $$$$$..BIG..$$$$$ at (seemingly) anybody that can wear a whistle and talk a good line with NO RECORD of achievement. Handing out extensions and huge buyouts for FAILURE. The hiring of head coaches has begun to look like the "Lawsuit Lottery". AD's across the country might as well start advertising their openings on the Jerry Springer show.
