The EXperts say Martin a GREAT Hire

I really liked Pearl as our coach, but I and everyone else need to realize that he screwed up. When you screw up, you pay the price. Coach Martin will have Tennessee basketball at the top of the SEC in 1-3 years. I believe Martin will actually be a better recruiter than Pearl was. Pearl had a difficultly in getting a point guard and a center that would allow us to break into the final four. I hope Martin can do that. He can do it. I believe he will do it.

Given the fact that I'm from Big Ten country and am around the same age as Martin, I have seen him for years. Knowing the system he played for at Purdue and the people he has coached under along the way, I feel pretty confident that he will be a good coach. I also feel that his youth and background should make him a really good recruiter. Those two things together should make UT a top team in the SEC for some time. Whether that good can become a great will determine UT's success on the national level. I'm willing to give this guy a couple years to get his system and players in place. The only thing I was disappointed with was the fact that Hamilton did not wait to see if he could lure Smart or Steven away from their schools.

Oh! Those guys are not experts. The real experts are the guys in here, who don't give a rat's ass about basketball, but claim they are an expert on hoops. Our experts say thgat this is a poor hire because he was not a famous name.

Maybe our experts can talk some nonsense into the ESPN guys' heads.

The experts loved the Wade Houston hire too. Not trying to offend anyone here, but no one in the media is going to criticize a Division 1 school that hires a minority as a head coach. That's not the way they roll.

Would he have been a low profile hire had Mizzou, or Purdue hired him?

Doesn't change a bit. Martin is still a low profile hire. At least you can call Bruce Pearl a winner before he came here. Martin? I am not sure, given he has been a head coach for only 3 years with a mediocre record. I would feel more comfortable if we had hired a proven winner rather than a 3-year head coach with a mediocre 61-41 record and one NIT win. Given our circumstances through, I am fine with taking a chance on a young head coach who seems to be on upswing. I hope it all works out for us.

By the way, whether Mizzou or Purdue "could have" hired him means nothing to me. If that makes you feel better, go for it.
