Coaching is everything in CFB
Look at what the Hire of Sabah to Alabama did
The hiring of Harbaugh at UM
The hiring of Pederson at UW
hell even Petrino at UL......All those schools opened the check book with the exception of UL they just took the risk.
If Butch does stay he needs to stop the loyalty bull**** and hire excellent coordinators and let them come in and coach instead of him micromanaging.
Yes we "improved" but let's not forget who we are, Tennessee should be competeing for the SEC title every year and in talks of possibly being in the CFB playoffs. We shouldn't be happy with trips to the Music City Bowl or Idaho potato bowl.
Yeah, and Strong and Muschamp were the hot "names of the day" when they were hired. Even with the "name" coaches it's possible to swing and miss.
Tom Herman's stock has already dropped, in fact.
As for some of the names you mention, Peterson was my number one choice for the Vols for years, but he won't leave the Far West. Harbaugh I would have loved to have, but he will only go to Michigan.
Petrino is overated. He did well at Ark, but they never lost fewer than 3 games while he was there. Hell, Butch is pretty close to that level of achievement now.
And Louisville is close to having two losses. Their win over FSU was very impressive, but FSU is down this year and other than that they play in a pretty weak conference, Clemson aside. Who they lost to.
Patrino is a very good caoch. Does not belong in disucssions of Saban, Meyer or Harbaugh. As much as I like Petersen, I want to see him at UW a while longer before I group him with those other three, but he is close. Jimbo fisher is another good coach, but has tons of talent every year and plays a mostly easy schedule. I'd put him at the end of those three.
But Petrino is nowhere near the elite level yet.
