Our man Josh, not Heupel, the other one, is making noise. Seems like thunder and rumble noise.

Josh Dobbs is improving

The competition to be Brock Purdy’s backup could become more heated if Josh Dobbs continues to make improvements as seen on Saturday. The Tennessee product was much more accurate, not only connecting on a deep pass to Danny Gray but also executing a very successful fake handoff where several defenders took the bait.

Dobbs completed 11 of his 12 attempts on Saturday while splitting reps with Brandon Allen, who was held to only six completions on his 10 attempts.

Meanwhile Hendon Hooker is struggling and in danger of not making the team.

#5 is basically still a rookie

Nice paragraphs on Emmanuel Moseley

Moseley has been taking a majority of his reps in the slot through the first handful of days in camp and is well on his way to challenging for a starting role in a room that added two veterans and two rookies this past offseason.

"I got experience there, I played a little bit in San Francisco," he said. "Played a little bit, learned a lot…but I'm learning from guys that's out there right now, meeting with the coaches. Still got to learn, it's not an easy position to learn, but it's one that I know I can take."

I've wanted Dobbs to succeed as much or more than anyone, but he's been in the league 8 years and we're still getting excited about comments like "he successfully executed a fake hand-off" and "completed a deep pass." Eh, not great. Also a bit of an indictment regarding the talent level in the NFL right now.

I don't see him losing a battle to Allen. First Dobbs is just better. Second Dobbs is a more clear replacement for Purdy as far as skillset. Using NCAA/Madden terms Allen is a Field general type. Purdy is an Improviser. Dobbs is an improviser/scrambler. Dobbs showing more accuracy is scary for all parties involved. He also has starting experience and success. Also Dobbs is younger by 3 years.

I'd love to see him bust out, become QB1 and make it count.
Beating out Purdy will be a task. I would personally be conflicted somewhat lol. Purdy's story is just too awesome. I mean he is hands down the most successful Mr Irrelevant ever. He is the only Mr Irrelevant to ever have real success in the league. His only competition is kicker Ryan Succop.

Maybe he shows out and gets traded to a hungry team at deadline.. or Purdy does. I am a huge niners fan and a Purdy fan but if I had to make a choice id pick Astro 100 out of 100 times. The only think I love more than VFL's showing out in the NFL is them doing it in the garnet and gold.

The former Vol had an up-and-down spring, struggling at times during OTAs and minicamp.

It turns out there was a good reason for those struggles.

Hooker told the Detroit Football Network that he suffered a dislocated finger on his throwing hand during OTAs.

“A lot of people don't know, I dislocated my finger in OTAs,” said Hooker to Detroit Football Network. “I dislocated my finger in the first practice, so those OTAs, I couldn't control the ball like I wanted to. It was my ring finger. That's what's going on the laces. That's how I control the ball, even if other quarterbacks might not control the ball that way. That affected my ball a lot. So I'm trying to get back into my rhythm, ripping the ball.”

I agree and am also, just saying I'd have to think for a few seconds before picking him. Id pick him every time. Ya know one of those choices you'd rather not have to make.

I'm not saying it for sure doesn't happen, but I seriously, seriously doubt Dobbs ends up QB1 in San Fran barring Purdy getting a season ending inury, Dobbs is a solid backup and good to plug in, but he proved last year he's not a full time answer at QB. He started out great and got worse each week until he was benched in Minnesota and demoted to 3rd string.

I get change of scenery/different teams but last year he had a chance to show out and he showed he's at best a temporary starter.

I mean he got to start for 2 teams last year and that ended kinda weakly. For about a week he was the talk of the NFL but that didn't last very long.

I doubt Dobbs is ever a regular qb1 in the NFL. However, he was drafted started more games in the league than any Vol QB since Peyton graduated (obviously not including Hendon).

oh Dobbs winning out in SF is all roses and pipedreams wearing orange-tinted glasses...just reveling in the what ifs. But nah I think he showed last year he was playing on bad teams.

Uhh where's d4h?

Dobbs making headlines in training camp is no longer relevant. Neither is him playing well in the preseason. The standard now is how well he plays in the regular season. He showed last year in adverse situations he could play. Now he needs to show that when given an ideal situation he can be even better. It'll obviously take an injury for him to play ahead of Purdy. But if it does happen that is when he will get to show us whether he deserves to be a starter in this league. I still believe he can do it. He just needs to go out there and prove it.
