There is an ongoing theme on Volnation, as of late, and that is the Star Debate.
We have one side, who proclaims that any player below a 4* is doomed to failure and will be nothing.
On the other side, we have the "diamonds in the rough" crowd, who believes that every 3* recruit that we get will turn out to be "legend" and do wonderful things at UT
Then you have the reasonable crowd. The ones who truly understand recruiting. The ones that understand that the stars dont make the player, its just a way to sell subscriptions to Rivals and Scout websites. To hype up the off-season. A way to make money off the College Football fan during the off season.
If the scouting services and star system was so great and perfect, why do coaches spend so much time watching film, going to games, and evaluating players? Rivals and Scout does that for them already. They even rank them for them. The coaches should play more golf, fish, or play parcheesi during the season. Why bother?
In recruiting, there is no such thing as a sure bet. Its like gambling, you take chances and sometimes you hit and sometimes you miss. Plain and simple. The only ones who win the most are the ones that study the film, evaluate the talent themselves. You can not rely on someone else to do your work for you. See Fulmer and Bobby Bowdens last seasons for an example.
Another thing is you dont recruit players that dont fit your system. Its useless. It wont work. It may in NCAA '11, but not in the real world.
Can you move a 5* lineman to QB? He's a 5*, he should be able to do anything, right?
You have to recruit to fit your type of play and to fill the needs. If you have to fill holes in the OL and DL, you wont get a lot of 5* talent at those positions. Maybe a half a dozen a year to spread between 117 teams. Its slim pickins.
You will have to fill your needs with 3* players. Its a fact. Every team does it, not just Tennessee.
I know this post wont make a difference in the opinion of some on this forum, who in my opinion, find any reason they can to bash the current staff, but it makes me feel better to share my thoughts on the matter.
Go Vols!!!
