Well we all thought the dark cloud that's been hanging over Knoxville for some time now has went away but unfortunately it's here to stay. Look at all what's happened over the years:

• The Dooley years. In 2010, we went 6-7. Lost to North Carolina in a heartbreaking fashion. In 2011, we went 5-7. In 2012, we went 4-7 resulting in being the laughing stock of the SEC. Those were depressing times.

• The Butch Jones years. In 2013, we didn't know what to expect from Butch. He was the mastermind of coach speak and had all these catchy slogans that made him look like a smart coach. We were all excited about his recruiting ability that led to a top 5 class despite going 5-7 of the season. In 2014, we were all excited at the beginning of the season. We did show improvement by going 7-6 of the season with a bowl win over a good Iowa team that's now currently ranked #23. Jones also finished with another top 5 recruiting class.

• What's happening right now? Most people had high expectations for this team. Some of us had us going 8-4, 9-3, and even 10-2. We had so much Media hype coming into the season. Some experts even picked us to win the SEC East. Right now, we're currently sitting at 2-3 (0-2) conference play with some close losses:

- Oklahoma: Lost 31-24 (OT)
- Florida: Lost 28-27
- Arkansas: Lost 24-20

All those games for maybe except the Oklahoma game, should have been fairly easy wins!

There's a lot of negativity going around by the media on Butch Jones over his stupid coaching decisions. Not to mention the Mack Crowder incident that's still going on right now. Then we find out today one of our most consistent receivers (Pig Howard) was dismissed from the team. He hasn't done much this season but he did give his all for Tennessee. Most importantly, Butch is losing the fans and if he keeps it up, more than likely he'll lose the players as well.

• Point in the making. There seems to be a pattern going on here. Everyone on Volnation gets excited at the beginning of the season then all the sudden hell breaks lose. Tennessee has more bad luck than any college football team out there. I hate to say it but the dark cloud that's hanging over Neyland Stadium is here to stay longer than we thought. I hope things will change for the better for our program but right now we just have to deal with it.

After almost 10 years, one does have to ask the possibility of a supernatural force holding the Vols under water?

The dark cloud is just a cute analogy for the administration's lack of balls when it comes to hiring proven coaches. They keep rolling the dice in every sport.

That has worked out exactly once--Bruce Pearl. And now he's at Auburn AFTER proving himself to be a great coach.

Barnes may turn out to be a great hire, but his piss poor recruiting so far suggests he's what everyone feared he would be: past his prime and over the hill.

No curse. Just getting what we deserve for stupid decision after stupid decision.

Also on the other hand the administration knows the fans are going to keep giving them money and not getting anything in return.

...

I haven't seen much to indicate that he's losing the fans, just losing a chunk of message board posters. Not even the same thing. Besides, he was going to lose a certain percentage of those anyway.

The fans can still be lost, sure, but we're not there yet.

This right here. Let's take a look at the football hires
Kiffin: hired due to his ability to recruit, NFL connections, OC experience, dad as DC. Problem is we gave him the lowest buyout possible so he left ASAP

Dooley: hired due to his daddy's name, didn't seem sleezy like Kiffin, was willing to take on the dumpster fire that Kiffin had created due to recruits leaving and NCAA sanctions, had to be a cheap hire since we were still paying Fulmer. Problem was he wasn't able to coach at this or any level.

Jones: hired due to a couple of good years following Kelly, had good organizational skills and a plan to reenergize the UT brand, was a great salesman, was cheap hire since we were still paying off Doiley. Problem is he has never been a good coordinator or shown a history of winning

Who are "most people" in your scenario? Are you speaking of VN or sport writers and coaches? Anyone who predicted 10-2 was really reaching. From what I read, the majority of non-VN posters picked us to finish 7-5 or 8-4. Why would Arkansas be considered an easy win? They began the year as number 18 in the polls. OU began as #19. I admit that I had penciled in FL as a win. I did not predict us to win against OU or AR (or AL or GA for that matter). Yes, I expected an 8-4 season, which technically could still happen, but it is unlikely. I do think finishing 7-5 is still within our reach. If we lose the next two, then we would have to win out to finish 7-5. The competition certainly drops down a level after AL.

At the beginning of the year, I would have been ecstatic to be in a position to win against OU, FL and AR at the end of the game. I have been critical of the coaching in those games, but I also realize that having a chance to win with our last possession or just needing to make one defensive stop shows me that we are not too far from being a good team again.

2007 was our last good year. We will become relevant again in 2017 or 2018. For firing fulmer in 2008 we have 10 years of bad luck.

I agree. I think we are the best 2-3 team in the country, soon to be the best 2-5 team.:whistling:
