Ohio St and Michigan still have to play.....and then the winner could lose the BigTen title game to wisconsin. UofL could lose tomorrow night vs Houston. Washington still has ranked rival Washington St. and the PacTen title game to play. Clemson still has the ACC title game to play.

Some losses here, us winning out and beating Bama and who knows.

Yes, it is a long shot, but not an impossible one!

We would have to win the SEC, and even then Alabama will still go. Wisconsin would be in if they won the Big 10. If Ohio St beats Michigan but fails to go to the big 10 title, they will go to the playoff. So, in short, yes, it is impossible.

A three loss team will not be in the playoff.

If you have a bunch of 2 loss teams at the top....why not? why couldn't a 3 loss SEC champion get in?

Except you're not even accounting for the rest of the teams ranked above UT.

If we hadn't lost to USCjr, then It would have been possible. At this point virtually everyone ahead of us would have to lose the rest of their games and we would have to win out to even have a shot. Statistically impossible.

No, OP, it's impossible.

Even if EVERY unlikely thing you mentioned comes to pass, there are still a dozen or so 2-loss teams with better resumes and currentlly ranked higher than the Vols. We're not leaping over ALL those teams.

So, no. It is impossible.

No 3-loss team is getting into the playoff. Period. Likely only one or at most two of the 2-loss teams will.

p.s. To make the point a bit clearer. Even if every one of those unlikely events occurred, here's the list of teams ranked ahead of us and with fewer losses that we would have to leapfrog (showing their loss total under your scenario):
  • Bama - 1
  • West Virginia - 1
  • Ohio State - 2
  • Mich - 2
  • Clemson - 2
  • Louisville - 2
  • Penn State - 2
  • Oklahoma - 2
  • Colorado - 2
  • Oklahoma State - 2
  • Utah - 2
  • Nebraska - 2
(at least 3 of those are conference champions, btw)

There aren't going to be a bunch of 2 loss teams. Look at who every has left. As huge as this weekend's upsets were, you're hoping for a slew of even bigger upsets to happen the next three weeks.

We should be first in the East, not even worrying about what the chump gators are doing... Sitting in the top 10... Win out... Knowing we have a prayers chance against AL in championship game. Instead Butch lost to yet another inferior opponent, we are relying on a FL loss, and have no shot in hell of beating AL if we somehow win the East... and thinking about the playoffs is a joke.

it ain't happening. even if Bama loses, the SEC CG, they're still going to the play off. and no way we as the SEC champs with 3 losses, or FL for that matter, gets in ahead of Clemson, Louisville, Michigan, OSU, Oklahoma, or Washington, depending on who wins/loses remaining games.

How about one that is the sec champ and 1st team to beat #1 and NC Alabama in 25 games?

That's still not enough. We'd need a 2 week slew of almost nothing but upsets...like including FCS teams beating ranked teams upsets.

We'd get a nice Sugar Bowl bid, though.

Don't lose to the Gamecocks. That is what killed our chances to this point. We can still win out and get nice consolation prizes. Maybe even an SEC decoder ring. That's it.

So here is the scenario for us to make a case for playoffs:

a) We win all our games, Florida loses theirs and we beat Alabama in the SEC CG.
b) Michigan beats Ohio state but loses to Wisconsin in Big 10 Championship game.
c) Oklahoma Beats WV.
d) Washington loses one more.
e) Clemson loses to South Carolina or in the ACC Conference Championship.
f) Louisville loses one more (Houston ?)

Having all these things go for us will ensure that there is no Power 5 team, except Alabama, with less than two losses.

Here are 4 playoffs teams:

1) Alabama, despite losing to us will be 12-1 and get in playoffs.
2) There will be one of the two loss teams (Wisconsin lets say since they will have beaten Michigan)
3) Another two loss team (Oklahoma or Clemson) or One of the non-power 5 unbeaten teams (Western Michigan)
4) For the 4th team, selection committee could either pick from one of the two loss teams or non-power five teams (same as #3) or they could give extended look at Team like TN, who basically just avenged their third loss against #1 ranked team by beating them. Hard sell but would look very impressive.

I know, still very improbable for all these to happen and even if they did, slight chance for us to get in. But there is still a path.
