Huge victory for the Alpharetta/Roswell "I can't go downtown because it's too black" crowd.
The new stadium will have an Atlanta address at the intersection of I-75 and I-285. It will feature increased access to major roadways, a variety of transportation options and additional parking close to the stadium.
Also, this just doesn't make much logistical sense to me. Cobb County's refused MARTA multiple times, right? Also, 285's traffic is just as bad as 75 from my experience.
MARTA is barely a presence at Turner Field now. The nearest station is a mile away and the shuttle to Five Points is only for people that don't know any better.
Only 42,000 seats in the new place and at that price tag ? The Braves draw pretty good dont they ? I think they need to up that to at least 55,000 seats or ticket prices could be at New York level.
Should've happened years ago. Olympic Stadium was a sweetheart deal though.
The Braves have eagerly trumpeted how this new ballpark will bring them closer to their fanbase, and there's likely some truth to that. But the purely economic calculus makes relocation an obvious choice. Long-discussed renovations to Turner Field would cost the Braves at least $200 million, with no public money available to defray costs. For roughly that same $200 million, they can get an entirely new stadium instead.
And taxpayers foot the bill, naturally.
Cobb County Taxpayers Won't Get A Say On Funding The Braves' Stadium
