The blue print on how to beat us is out

Stop Lanier from getting wide open looks and leave everyone else open to shoot and just wait for the rebound. We will beat ourselves.
The thing is, Lanier is just missing wide open looks in our losses (others are as well). We’re just not an amazingly consistent 3PT shooting team

Some really serious bad takes in this discussion. it really did not age well.

So did Barnes come up with the game plan today against Fla or what ? A real team effort with every player contributing against formidable odds. .

Coach Majors mother had a really good perspective when she said “everyone burns the biscuits once in a while”.
Without going back to see which posts you're talking about, there is a blueprint for beating us playing the way we've played before today. We took a different offensive approach, today, kind of out of necessity. This was evident, but also mentioned by Dane Bradshaw, specifically in the broadcast. Not really hard to see we were far more focused on getting the ball into the paint. Also more evident, and also mentioned in the broadcast, is that Lanier worked much harder to get open today than he has all year. Florida defended him exactly as they did in Gainesville, but he worked so much harder and aggressively coming off screens to get open, and then of course, he hit his shots today, which makes a difference.

Great post. Spot on. A factor to consider about Lanier was that he was open off a lot of screens in the 2nd half because Gainey is a threat around the free throw extension. Because of his diminutive size, ZZ doesn't create any real threat in that area. Defenders don't sag to help as often. With Gainey penetrating, the help defense on Lanier isn't as intense. Just an observation

I agree.
This thread ( as far as original post) has aged fine. If anything, Barnes probably read it and decided some changes needed to be made and took note lol.

In all seriousnes, that blueprint is still there. It will be up to us to continue to make the changes to stop teams from using it. We definitely played a different game today and props to Barnes for that. I especially liked how he took the TO before the half and got a play to the rim. Just wish he would use his To's more like that in the future ( if you are reading my threads Rick, be sure to do that).
We focused more on getting to the basket and less on looking to jack up 3's whilst not getting any rebounds. We also found a line up we can run to give ZZ a little rest or if he gets in foul trouble. Dubar may have missed some he should've hit, but he did get to the rim a couple times and played excellent D ( narrative of him not being able to playD has now been put to rest in my book via these last two games). He got a big block and showed he can help guard a Big if he has to. Made a few good passes, too. If he can get some of his 3's to fall, we'll be in good shape come tourney time as far as bench.

All and all, feeling much better about our chances going forward! Go Vols!

The print too win is in, work inside out. Make the commitment to penetrate the paint. It’s a lot harder on defenses with you don’t just keep jacking up 3’s. Continue to penetrate. Think inside out! GBO
Yep. It think they learned their lesson ( I hope) after that KY loss. It looked like a more conscious effort to get to the basket was made today. If that's not there after you try a few times then you take the the 3. I mean you still take some when left wide open but be in better position to rebound.

Hopefully this game serves as a catalyst on how to play differently...being down 2 starters for that game was the best thing that could happen to this team and it came at exactly the right time. We'll see if they can carry forward this style of play (move without the ball and attack the paint with cuts and dribble drives).

This.
Great teams figure out a way to win close games. Especially at home.
We're a good team because of our defensive. We will not be a great team tho, because of our offense.
The lesson to learn here is you can't hyper-focus on defense to the point you have no offense.
Balance. If we learn anything as a program this year ( and last few years), hopefully it is this. We need balance.
I think all involved have known that for a while. We didn't recruit Knecht or Lanier e.g. for their proven defensive prowess.

It's more than just recruiting a player that has a good ppg average or something. You have to practice/coach/focus/game plan it, too. We've seen guys not progress here in that department and even regress ( as far as stats).
Take Gainey for example, I think under a system that makes offense a higher priority he could get close to 20 a game night in and night out.
He had like 15 ppg his 22-23 season and has had considerably less last two years.
I'm not necessarily complaining. I'm thankful for Barnes and his culture of defense. He can coach her until he decides to hang it up for all I am concerned, and I'd hope a lot of that culture of defense remains after he retires.
Having said that, for us to ever be a real championship contender we gotta have some offensive minded game plan as well.
That's all I am saying.
