Both coaches really want to run the ball and establish it early, of course. Both want to rely heavily on the OL, of course. However, both are similar defensive coaches and will try their hardest to shut that down, again, of course.
So does one (or both) of the offenses try to open up the game with the pass to establish the run?
Because I have no idea what they should do, I'm worried Chaney will have the wrong gameplan. On one hand, he's been known to be a little pass happy, but on the other hand he knows how to call a good game and mix things up.
There is a very narrow window for them to get the offense going. They can't get down 14-0 with 1 first down after 1.5 quarters. So what concerns me the most is how they start the game.
Either way, if it doesn't work I will be mad haha. They'll be stubborn to be one dimensional and get nowhere running or they'll try to pass and JG will screw up. The margin of error is razor thin.

I'm just gonna hold off on formulating reasons to be mad at our coaching staff until, you know, we see how they do.

Go Vols!
Perhaps I came across wrong. I was acknowledging the absurdity of being mad at the coaches if they make bad calls since I have no idea what they should do myself.
I just think getting the gameplay right immediately is so critical. And obviously the rain makes gameplanning difficult.
I also brought up (but wasnt stressed) Georgia has the same question to ask. Will they hardly put the ball in Bennett's hands until necessary, or will they make Tenn respect the pass right off the top?
Everyone talks about great O vs great D coaching chess matches, but these teams are so similar in style and strength, I am anxious (and can't decide on a prediction) about what Pruitt and Co's gameplan will be.

Have you watched the last two games? 😂
Yep. Nothing special about any pass play calling with JG. Like I said, the passing playbook with JG is like a bourbon stained napkin with some drunken scribbling on it which you thought was a hot chicks phone number but turns out you just doodled a bunch of veiny weiners.

I appreciate you circling back to this, Other Guy. I understand what you meant in your original post much better now.

And I totally agree. A game like this, and thinking through the possible approaches our coaches might be taking, tends to expose for us fans just how complex and chess-like the mental part of the game is.

*salute*

Indeed, I have been pondering this same question all week. It’s like playing yourself, except with a championship defense.

My hope is.....attitude and want it more wins the day. I think our boys are going to have to dig deep and find a nasty disposition to lean on. Especially, our D line. They really need to have the game of their lives to stuff the run, and put the ball in Bennett’s hands. That’s our best chance I believe. And that is still a tall order.

Bring it. GBO.

I think you have ignored the most obvious point to look at in your question and who might pass early and often. That is our less than stellar backside pass defense. I fear Ga. will throw early and often and I fear with good success.

I agree with you on JG. But this example is not up to your usual intelligence.

The weather will force a run game no matter who wants to open up and air attack.

Cheney and Pruitt will try to take whatever the Defense gives them. Same for Smart and Monken. Both teams are going to try to establish themselves at the line of scrimmage early in the game. Whichever team wins the line of scrimmage and can run the football and keep the other from running the ball and wins the turnover battle will win the game.

I wouldn't worry, the pressure is on in this one Georgia and Tennessee really has nothing to lose. Georgia is supposed to win handly. Chaney's multiple offense truly is capable of being multiple this year. I believe, however, the game is won or lost on the other side, Georgia's offense vs. Tennessee's defense.

Let's look at the 3 things that can happen when a team passes the ball. A catch (good), a drop/no catch (bad), and an interception (bad). Two out of the three things are bad for the offense. Let's look at what can happen when you run the ball. A gain from the LOS (good), a tackle for loss (bad), a fumble (bad). So now you can see why the coaches like to run the ball because....... wait I am not sure why coaches run the ball. Let's hire Kiffen as OC and pass the ball 80 times a game.

You forgot a 3rd down throw to the sideline for no yardage (sad)

IMHO, if JG is throwing high in warm-ups, run the ball and only throw sideline routes down the field. On the other hand , if one of his short throw missile balls hits a Dawg defender in the head, could take him out for the game. Tough choices but maybe missile balls could be our secret weapon.

Chaney's passing play book is basically closed with JG at the helm (which has been shown when JG gets benched), so no, they won't open up the game with passing.
Oh please, your theory is evidenced by JG completing no passes this season, gotc

Guys (and gals), I've played or watched football since the late 60's. Unless it is raining really hard, and Athens looks like it right on the border of hard rain or just rain, throwing the ball is even easier for the offense. Any time you have unsure footing the offensive guy, who knows where he is going, gains a half step to a full step extra advantage on the defensive back or linebacker. Now if the wind is blowing hard this goes out the window. The exception would be if Casey Clausen is the quarterback, he could not throw a wet football at all, but he was a road warrior. think he was something like 21 and 3 on the road.
Anyway that's my 2 or 3 cents worth GO VOLS!

I get that, but will Kirby take the chance with the inexperienced QB against Pruitt, especially if it's raining and they know UTs DL isn't exactly world class?
