If you like castles don’t miss Stirling, if possible. Edinburgh Castle is kind of a dump in comparison.

Seeing the highlands by rail would be optimal. I had to drive everywhere outside Edinburgh and my god was it a pain, especially up in the highlands where there are a bunch of single track roads.

Also: haggis is tasty.
Cool. I’m flying into Manchester on a Sunday and hopefully going to the Everton/Man U game if I can figure out how to get tickets. Then going to spend the next week in Scotland before making my way back down towards London.

For as much time as I’ve spent over there the past few years, I have yet to try my hand at driving. In some ways Scotland would be an ideal place to get a little experience. But, like you said, I think going by train will be far more relaxing and enjoyable.
