Good to know, because that was kind of what I was planning on doing. I was definitely going to spend a couple days in Edinburgh, but after that was just planning to buy a rail pass for the week and spend a few days riding around the Highlands. I've got almost a full week to fill, so I'm not really going to be rushed.

If you like castles don’t miss Stirling, if possible. Edinburgh Castle is kind of a dump in comparison.

Seeing the highlands by rail would be optimal. I had to drive everywhere outside Edinburgh and my god was it a pain, especially up in the highlands where there are a bunch of single track roads.

Also: haggis is tasty.
