Anyone a subscriber to The Athletic? I've been hearing about them a lot. Yesterday Josh Ward announced they are sponsoring the Rocky Talk Podcast.

What are your opinions on their coverage of Tennessee Football and CFB in general? Is it worth $36 a year? I doubt it, but if someone thinks the site is absolutely amazing, I'd love to hear more about it.

I've been considering subscribing to them, because I really like long-form sports journalism, and everything I've seen from them (granted, in short previews) seems to be really good.

So far off of somehow using my Facebook to get 6 free articles it has been good. They are always on top of things and bring good information to the table. I don't subscribe to anything and I'm probably going to subscribe to The Athletic.

Edit: If you get the annual it is $60 for a whole year, $5 a month essentially. If you do the monthly it is $9.99 a month.

I'm trying out a free trial and have been perusing their backlog. Nothing so far has made me think about doing any more than a free trial. Seems like a solid site thatt would be great if it was free. For a paid service, I'm not sure they bring much more to the table than a VQ or 247 for Vols fans.

If you're looking for an alternative to something like ESPN Insider they're ok, I guess. They don't really cover recruiting or anything, though.

Wait, so what price is it? I thought it was $3/mo like the OP said, now you've instilled doubt in me.

Call me cheap, but I would never subscribe to something where I had to pay for sports media coverage. There's so much information out there for free. And anything worth knowing seems to get cross-pollinated throughout the internet almost instantly. JMO.

The quality gulf is substantial between The Athletic and the vast majority of writing yiu find for free online, in my humble opinion

There's no program insiders there or anything, just some really well written pieces on stuff we already know.

Is that worth 36 bucks a year? Maybe. Not for me.
Basically how I feel.

Everything they do is solid, but if you’re the type of person who reads VN multiple times a day, they’re not bringing anything you haven’t seen for free info wise.

If you’re interested in following a lot of different sports/teams across the country, I could see it being worth it. If you’re wanting a service that just brings info about Tennessee football, there are other services that bring more to the table, IMO.

Glad to see the discussion, everyone. Thanks for checking us out. We're excited about the partnership between us and Rocky Talk. I've got a decade of experience covering college football and I just moved here from Dallas. I'd love to answer any questions you guys have about us or what we do, and our goal is to tell you things you don't know and can't find anywhere else.

For example, I charted every pass Jarrett Guarantano and Keller Chryst threw yesterday. I also spent a week in Jeremy Pruitt's hometown of Rainsville, Alabama for a six-part series looking at his link to his hometown, his days as an MTV reality star, how his playing career forecasted his career in coaching, how he quietly lost 70 pounds early in his coaching career, what went on at Georgia and how his personality has pushed him through the coaching ranks and today, we looked behind the scenes of the Tennessee coaching search from his perspective.

We will be covering recruiting, but with a little more perspective and context beyond just the "he might be going here" that you'll see elsewhere. For instance, I wrote about how Peyton Manning accidentally landed Tennessee Brian Maurer for its 2019 class.

Here's our full Tennessee page, updated anytime there's something new.

You can get 40% off your membership with this link. It's just $2.99/month.

I'll be around today if you have any questions. Thanks again for checking us out!

Do you get cable? If so, you pay ESPN >$9.00/mo for that.

If gamblers find it extremely useful it might be worth it. Otherwise free is a perfectly appropriate price for sports-related info, unless you can dispose of the income without whining about gasoline, health care, food, child care, et al. If so, have at it.

It's like paying for a newspaper subscription or paying for a book. The articles are long-form, well written and paint a picture in the mind. That's the value they bring. Not to say they don't bring some things that others don't (because they do, as David alluded to), but to say even if they only brought the same information as everyone else, they're bringing it in a different and interesting way. May not be everyone's forte, but it is for a lot of people.

I have it. Love it! David Ubben does a fine job with well written articles. He's doing a 6 part series on Pruitt that's awesome. Plus all the coverage on all sports and teams. They have brought a ton of talent in from around the sports world to get this thing going. I've been very impressed. I paid $2.50 month/$30.00 year. Articles are very thorough and detailed. Not just fluff pieces.

If you're only subscribing for Tennessee info, then you'll probably be disappointed. But for college football in general, it's absolutely worth it. And the coverage of MLB and the NFL made it worth it for me before they even launched the college sports side.

(Edit: That's not a shot at David at all, love his stuff. But if you're looking for it as an alternative to GoVols247 or VQ, that's not what it is or is intended to be)

Biggest plusses for me beyond the quality writing: Zero ads and ZERO AUTO-PLAY VIDEOS. There are a lot of free sites i'd pay $2.99 a month to not have to see autoplay videos.

The $2.99/month is the offer for the first year. Mine just rolled over for the second year and I somehow got the same rate again when it auto-renewed. They sent me a email to let me know it was about to renew and gave me the option to cancel with one click. Incredible customer service after what I've been through with the KNS and others.

It is what I stated it is lol, I just looked today.

Edit: welp that was before David Ubben showed up and dropped that discount code. Swell guy I'd say.

Lol, so do I get a membership for free since I basically got all these people interested? Just curious. šŸ˜‰ Great article on JG and Chryst.
