Did the Continental Army win it, or did Howe lose it by not striking out against Washington outside New York following the British withdrawal from Philadelphia?

I have no idea. I did have the opportunity to hear David McCullough speak this week, though. Aside from his grandfatherly attitude that everybody under the age of 50 is by definition uneducated, it was pretty interesting to hear his insights into our founding fathers, particularly John Adams and his descendants.

Howe blew it and Washington had an iron will and patience beyond a thousand men.

Agreed, Washington saved the nation. He held the army together, if nothing else. But had Howe took the offensive after the retreat to New York, rather than go balls deep in his mistress, the Brits would have won. Until it was too late, when Rochambeau arrived, by then, the cat was in the bag.

any victory on the part of the British was destined to be short lived. fortunately for the greatest assembly of men in the history of the world, it worked out for our team on the first go 'round and the second was just pathetic on the part of the brits.
