The "Almost" Guy

You can think of him anyway you like. But the fact is he literally broke records for losing here, and he was a complete joke personally. Losing and a$$hattery is a bad combination.

Count me as thinking he was way off, not "almost." 2016 losses completely, totally, absolutely wiped out any goodwill he or the players gained from beating Fla. and Georgia. As I have said before, he lost me permanently after Vandy 2013. Terrible, terrible program-killing home loss.

I still don't get him getting an Alabama job offer - - to do anything!

his biggest accomplishment in his coaching career to date was making Dooley look great!
Saban only hired Jones as a favor to Jimmy Sexton, who is both his and Jones’ agent. Jones “rehabs” at Bama under Saban for a year or two as a low-level “analyst”, then gets a middling job offer which puts money in Sexton’s pocket, as Sexton continually renegotiates Saban’s contracts and finds other ways to put money in his pocket. Pretty easy to understand.

Isn't it time we let Butch go? He is gone. Enough of name calling, looking back, and bemoaning the past. A new day is dawning; let's seize it and go forward!
No. We’ll let you know when we’re done. You might wanna have a seat, gonna take agile.

Butch's very offensive offense was the worst! Glad it's gone. And another thing why was he recruiting pocket passing QB'S? He should have had a Dobbs a Lamar Jackson never a JG our Dormady but that was just part of his problem. And the reason he didn't get a coaching job he has been exposed for what he is a loser with bad antics you can only fake it till you make for so long at some point you have to make it but all he did was brick his self in..

A lot of Butch bashing on this site and I’m not saying I haven’t taken part but rather than Butch being a 100% total loser I think of him as being an “almost” guy. I’m assuming anyone reading this is a dyed in the wool Vol fan and needs no reiterations to remember these games. So in 2015 we almost beat Oklahoma, lost in OT, so we “almost” won. Lost to Florida by 1, I can’t bring myself to write the ending, but we “almost” won. We had a lead on Arkansas but you know we “almost” won, and we had a 4th quarter lead on Alabama, and we “almost” won. Close the deal and we’re 12-0 and even if we don’t beat Bama in the rematch we’re still going to a New Years 6 bowl and if we really win instead of “almost winning” at 13-1 and the only loss being to the NC we’re maybe final ranking 2nd? Well “almost” anyway.
And then 2016 rolls around and you know we “almost” win the SEC East, except we choke on apple sauce. I don’t really want to go through the schedule but you see my point. Butch was the guy that “almost” got an MBA but flunked out last semester, “almost” dated a SI swim suit model except he got drunk and missed the Uber. I’m too painfully aware that we were 4-8 last year but if, and granted it’s a big “if” CJP is not an “almost” guy but a “gitter done” guy, I believe there is a big upside to this season.
There is still considerable talent on this roster and if they stay healthy and play to their ability and win the games they’re in, in the 4th quarter it could be pretty sweet. And the good Lord knows Volnation is surely ready for some pretty sweet.
That you Butch?

“Almost” is pushing it pretty far imo.

3-7 vs Georgia and Florida
0-5 vs Alabama
0-10 vs SEC West teams
2-3 vs Vanderbilt
14-26 vs SEC
5 win regular season, 6 win regular season, 4 win regular season in his 5 years here.

Not much “almost” in those stats.
These are very good points, but the OP also made some very good points, so what does that mean?

To me it means Butch was a very inconsistent leader. The program never had stability under his leadership and people didn’t know what to expect. That’s what you get when you hire a “ra ra” guy. He relied on being a good salesman and it worked...sometimes. But when it didn’t work, he turned purple and pointed fingers at everyone except himself because what he was selling WAS himself.

Pruitt is the opposite. He lets results speak for themselves. The only thing he’s sold since being here is championships represented on his staff and hard work. That will create consistency. Time will tell if we’ll be consistently good or consistently bad or somewhere in between. For now I’m just appreciating the change in culture.

Butch was clearly the almost guy, but almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

@1974Vol There was really only one season where you could say that, and that would be the 2015 season. We had the lead going into the 4th quarter of the Oklahoma, Florida, and Bama games. Had Botch not choked those games away, we would have been in the College Football Playoff, which is extremely sickening to think about.

Don’t forget that he blew a lead at home to Arkansas too.

Mark Richt was an "almost" guy at UGA and was rewarded with a HC job over a decade as a result. He never put a team on the field like we saw Jones put on the field in his final year as a Vol coach. Butch Jones was not an almost guy, he was a never gonna get it done guy.

Seemed like Dooley was more of an almost guy, with those LSU and UNC losses. (I don't know what the hell happened in that UK game when we couldn't stop a WR in the wildcat.)

We lost a lot of games we should've won due to him and his staff being unable to manage situational football
