I'll never forget that Mose Phillips touchdown pass from Heath Shuler in the rain. It seemed like the harder it rained that day, the louder the crowd became.

"He has scored. He has scored. He has gone all -- the -- way."

"Touchdown, big orange, in the downpour."

- John Ward

There are some great names in that video like Shane Bonham, Shawn Summers, Craig Faulkner, "Little Man" Stewart, Mike Stowell, Charlie Garner, David Horn, John Becksvoort, Todd Kelly, etc.

I was in the corner end zone about 20 rows up when Heath ran it in.You are right in that the harder it rained the better we played. It was crazy watching it unfold.

But just to be Debbie Downer...how did we manage to lose to a 3-7-1 Arkansas team at home and a 5-6 USCe team that year? Tough to be a Vol fan sometimes. As we also gave eventual NC Bama it’s toughest test of the season.

You are correct, but for me it was because of a completely different reason. That was my wedding day! We had been told that no matter what day we chose, DO NOT choose a day when there is a UT home football game. It turned out that was the only day that Patten Chapel was available, so we did it anyway. We had invited a bunch of die hard UT fans from Knoxville and Oak Ridge and my mother in law was surprised, but they all came.

It may have been raining in Knoxville, but it was a beautiful day in Chattanooga. I had brought a tiny little black and white portable TV and the guys were all crowded around this little bitty TV watching the game, drinking schnaps and slowly getting dressed. The photographer's assistant was listening to John Ward on his portable radio using an ear plug. Every time anything happened he would give us little hand signals. When Phillips scored he made a little goal post like you would when playing paper football. We all went nuts and were giving each other high-fives. I think that ended the photo session. Anyway, great memories of that game day.

It seems like almost every year (but 98) we manage to lose one or two we never should have lost. And we were dam lucky that year.

But wasn’t Heath Shuler something? He was a dual threat QB of the highest order

Seemed like it rained every year between ‘92 and ‘96 when we played.

My first trip to Neyland was ‘94. It rained before the game then cleared just before kickoff.

I went in 2002. I was sure we were going to get killed. Lost the previous year. Should have lost the year before that. No Spurrier.

Took my father to the game as a father/son thing. Felt good to pay his way to take him. Made me feel like a true grown up for the first time. As we headed to the game, I thought not only are we going to get killed, we're going to get absolutely soaked. The pull I had with the athletic department at the time put me in the nosebleeds.

Didn't realize how steep it was at the top and a steep slope and water are not a friendly combination. So, then I thought, we're going to killed, we're going to get soaked, and my father and I are going to bust our rear falling down up here.

Fortunately, none of those things happened.

Did not attend this 1992 game. Those were "baby Gators" with a senior QB. That team was not very good, but having a coach and a QB made them fairly competitive most of the year. However, Florida's next game against Mississippi State made this one against Tennessee look like a nail biter.

I remember this game well too! I was a freshman in the Pride of the Southland Band and didn’t know what it would be like wearing double layer wool in the craziest weather conditions. It’s weird how you can be miserable and joyous at the same time. I remember thinking we are already super soaked so God, bring it on even harder. He sure did!

if you recall, Majors returned and we promptly lost three straight - two of those to crappy teams. His return really changed the program in a negative way at that point, unfortunately.

Quick question to a lot of folks here. I have seen many people post on here in the past several years about the 1990 and 1992 games.

Did you all really hate Florida at that point or did that come later? I ask because at the time, we hadn't played a lot, Florida had not proven to be a thorn in Tennessee's side, etc. Or, is it something you look back on with greater fondness as a result of playing each other for 30 years now.

Just curious.

Never been in another game experience like it. It's true. The harder it rained, the louder Neyland got. Our crowd even jeered back at the sky when it thundered. We, students, danced soaked to the bone in the stands, and the VOLS put a smackdown on the Gators. It'll take full on dementia to forget the feeling in the stadium that day.

May we all live to see our beloved team roll over FL like that again.

Crazy we have only beat Florida 5 times since that game 28 years ago

And yet there are still fans that go into every season thinking we have a shot at beating UF. UF is an automatic loss for us. I cannot explain it. There is no rational or logical reason as to why we have lost to them so much.

It wasn't so much a hate of Florida to start with. It was for me little Steve running his mouth every change he got. Then of course the Florida fans and players got just as bad. I was at the game picked up a wet gator hat that a fan had left on the ground to remember the game by. Still have it somewhere. Btw I love the look of the end zones back in that era. Wish Phil would bring it back.

It was Spurrier more than anything, IMO. Well, Spurrier combined with the beatings.

I’ve hated them ever since Doug Dickey left and went there.

I remember that game. Great memory and great call by John Ward.

Can we bring those end zones back?
