This is the second edition of the Classic Cup. In 2006(using NCAA 07), the 1991 Miami Hurricanes walked away with the first Cup title. That tourney consisted 24 teams, and took 2 weeks, with the first final(1991 Miami vs. 1980 Georgia) taking place in Neyland Stadium in early August of 2006.

The tournament this year has been expanded to 32 teams, consisting of 8 groups of 4 teams. Basically, if you've ever watched the World Cup, you know how this goes. The top 2 advance to the tournament, in which the teams play a 16 team single-elimination tournament.

Pool A, Day 1(Friday, April 3, 2009)

Chris Fowler: Guys, our first pool of teams starts today in the Classic Cup. Who've you got?

Kirk: I really think that the 2001 Miami team is the favorite, not just in Pool A, but in the tournament alltogether. It would shock me if they lost a game. It really would.

Lee Corso: Kirk, I agree with you 100%. The 2001 Miami Hurricanes are too tough to be tamed.(puts on Sebastian mascot head). GO CANES!!!!!!

CF: Well, guys, thanks for the previews. This shapes up to be a great tournament.

Game 1, Pool A

2001 Miami Hurricanes vs. 1938 Tennessee

This was a hard fought game throughout. This game was tied 7-7 going into OT.

In the first overtime, the two teams both scored a TD, and hit their XP's. 14-14.

The second overtime saw Miami score a touchdown on the 1st play, but missing the extra point. Robert Neyland and the 1938 Vols saw the door kicked wide open, and The General made sure his Vols would take advantage, scoring a touchdown, and booting the extra point to pull off the monumental upset, 21-20 in double OT.

Game 2, Pool A

1988 Notre Dame vs. 1954 UCLA

UCLA tried to set the tone early, with a 102 yard runback for a touchdown. Coach Holtz made sure that his boys weren't phased, and 1988 Notre Dame proceeded to run them out of the Yale Bowl, scoring 28 points before UCLA scored again. UCLA only scored a FG after that, and 1988 ND would take the win, 28-9.

Well, I thought 2005 Texas was on there, but I guess not.

They will be replaced by 1981 Clemson.

Pool A - 2nd Day

Saturday, April 4, 2009

2001 Miami Hurricanes(0-1) vs. 1954 UCLA Bruins(0-1)

Looser faces elimination from tournament

The 54 Bruins, once again, returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Once again however, they would loose, as Miami racked up 17 unanswered. A late UCLA touchdown would not prove to be enough, and the 1954 UCLA Bruins are eliminated from tournament play.

Final Score - 2001 Miami - 17, 1954 UCLA - 14
--------------------------------------------------------------
1938 Tennessee Vols(1-0) vs. 1988 Notre Dame Fighting Irish(1-0)

Winner locks up a spot in the tournament

Even though General Neyland's teams are always a tough outing, the 88 Irish proved themselves to be a tougher outing, as they had a 21-7 lead. The 1938 Vols would score a late touchdown, and even recovered an onside kick, but were not able to score in time, and loose a close one, 21-14 to Notre Dame.

Pool A - Final Day of play

April 5, 2009

2001 Miami Hurricanes(1-1) vs. 1988 Notre Dame(2-0)
'01 Miami has to win to have shot at tournament

Again, a low scoring defensive battle ensued. Although Miami had a 9-7 lead at the start of the 4th quarter, Notre Dame scored a late touchdown, and dashed the Canes tourney hopes.

Final Score - 1988 Notre Dame - 15, 2001 Miami - 9
-------------------------------------------------------------
1938 Tennessee Volunteers(1-1) vs. 1954 UCLA Bruins(0-2)

As is expected between 2 pre-1960's teams, this was a defensive battle. UCLA returned a kickoff for a TD on the kickoff to the 2nd Half. Tennessee would score a field goal, and tried to go on a 4th quarter scoring drive, but were dashed. The game's only TD was enough, and UCLA won the game.

Final Score: 1938 Tennessee - 3, 1954 UCLA - 7
------------------------------------------------------------
Final Standings
Teams in italics are in the tournament
-----------------------------------
1988 Notre Dame - 3-0
1938 Tennessee - 1-2
2001 Miami - 1-2
1954 UCLA - 1-2

1938 Tennessee, by benefit of the tiebreaker, is in the tournament.
