With high school football prospects continuing to commit to colleges much earlier than a generation ago, Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Jamie Newberg discusses how classes in the Southeastern Conference are shaping up for 2010:
Q: How would you assess Tennessees new staff and its 2010 recruiting landscape to this point?
A: What they did on signing day and then in the days after, getting Janzen Jackson and then getting Bryce Brown and David Oku in between, was extraordinary. Youre talking about the nations No. 1 player in Brown, and Tennessee came out of nowhere. And to turn Janzen Jackson away from LSU? I think its just a sign that recruiting could turn Tennessee back into a super power. Theyre off to a good start for 2010, but theyre behind some people just because other schools already had a jump on this class. I think Tennessee will finish in the top 10, but where I think you will really see them flex their orange and white muscles will be in 2011 and beyond. They have already offered two dozen for 11 and have a couple of commitments, and thats the year I think youre really going to see Tennessee do extraordinarily well, but I see them no worse than 10th this year.
Q: Is Tennessee guard commitment Jose Jose (6-2, 355) going to take over for Alabamas Terrence Cody as the biggest player in the SEC?
A: Hes got a lot of girth to him, but once he gets to Knoxville and is in a college strength and conditioning program, I think hell lose a bunch of weight and gain some muscle. The kid has exceptional feet and athletic ability, so I think hes got a chance to be a very good player for them. If he was a little trimmer, there is no question he would be rated higher. In talking with some coaches, they said Russell Maryland, Warren Sapp and Cortez Kennedy were all similarly built at the same stage, and look what Ed Orgeron did with them.
