Maybe one day there will be conference tournaments to win in addition to regular season conference titles.

It's gonna cost OU and Texas roughly $160m each to make that 2024 dream happen and the BIG XII has no reason to negotiate. Texas has the money, Oklahoma doesn't. It's more reasonable to expect Oklahoma to wait until their contract expires and the buyout drops to roughly $80m each.

It's hilarious that the Big XII's fiscal future is predicated on making OU and UT pay as much as possible or to make them stay for 3 more seasons. Most conferences would be working on a mutually beneficial buyout (see the AAC's deal with the 3 departees). Not the Big XII, though.

The spring meetings and media days for all sports have to be very awkward.

It's even funnier that these are rules that Texas insisted on for the LHN coming home to roost. In the long run the BIG XII will be fine. The Oklahoma and Texas money is just for giggles and grins. 😂😂🤣

"Fine" is definitely the right word. And the money is not for anything other than pure desperation.

If the networks really want Oklahoma and Texas in the SEC for 2024 they will have to come up with a really sweet deal for the BIG XII. Something much sweeter than the ACC has otherwise Texas and OU will remain until the contract expires and then pay through the teeth to leave. Seems the BIG XII is holding a very solid hand of cards.

It's so cute that you think the Big XII is getting anything close to the ACC.

It's even cuter that you claim to be a media expert yet you have been wrong from the get go every step of the way on this subject. 😂😂🤣

Is it any wonder than literally every major program has left that conference? No one wants to be a part of the midmajor trash there

That's the thing. It's not just that they lost (or will lose) 6 programs. They lost (or will lose) 6 of the legit revenue producing schools. Every program that could get out, got out.

Kansas, Oklahoma St, Texas Tech and TCU are long shots but have a shot still of getting out even if slim. Literally no one wants Baylor or Iowa St or Kansas St, maybe the “new” AAC

IIRC the four new schools combined arent worth either leaving team separately. Again going off of memory the four new combine for a little over 3 million views. Oklahoma was over 4, and texas was over 5. The new Big 12 will have about 10 million views total, barely above the two leaving.

9 of the top 10 viewed games in the conference involved at least one of those schools.

They need the buyouts to offset the losses.

@BUBear can you link to Texas or Oklahoma owing if they wait out the contract? I thought if they waited until the 2025 season, or whatever, they were out clean.

They still owe something because the grant of rights is like 99 years. But without an actual contract that number is hard to pin down. UT and OU could easily say "Sign your new deal and see what you'll get without us. Whatever than number is per school, that's what we'll pay as buyouts." It sure wouldn't be $80 million.

It's still a little unreal how good the Big 12 was in the late 90's and 00's and now it's basically gone.

I remember thinking the Vols would play Kansas State in the BCS title game. They lost to A&am in the conf championship game while Cade McNown and UCLA lost to an average Miami team. Crazy.

For 99 years? Wtf were they thinking? Even schools in the SEC would be dumb to sign up for that.
