I keep reading puzzling accounts of his accolades as a recruiter.

He is a likeable guy who seems to not be very good at coaching the secondary (which is his job).

On a staff with Randy Shannon, Michael Barrow, Lance Thompson, TJ would be the 4th best recruiter on defense.

People need to get some perspective.

Considering a recruit's mother has said that if Joseph left, she would have major issues, I'd say hes fairly important to our recruiting efforts.

Recruits and families seem to like CTJ quite a bit and that is important.

TJ is to Dooley as Chavis was to Fulmer. Seems untouchable. It is a part of the larger issue with Dooley, IMO.

I think TJ may see an assignment change to special teams if RS wants to bring someone in. Additionally he is integral to our recruiting imo.

may have been true the year before.

moore and lanier and waggner etc talent is not the issue.

ask lott or fred white or terry fair if this is a well coached secondary.

Lanier is just an average cornerback.

Waggner is a good corner, but was forced to play out of position for the majority of the year. There was a big difference in our secondary when he could play at corner.

What has Moore shown you besides being highly rated before coming here? It is not Josephs fault that he decided to show up out of shape.

I'm 50/50 on CTJ right now. There were a lot of first year guys back there.

Lanier isn't just a monster cover corner.

Moore showed up with 10-15 pounds of bad weight. Which is a lot of weight on a DB.

Waggner was our best DB last year.

CTJ did a great job with Randolph but Teague was still playing(I have no idea why).

All this bashing of CTJ is kinda funny though seeing we don't/didn't have a consistent pass rush.

I seriously don't understand all the CTJ hate. He isn't great, but there were 3 coaches on last year's staff that I would have liked to get rid of before him.

I do not hate him. I will say that he is the only coach on our staff who I am certain no one else in the SEC would hire (hinshaw would have trouble finding a home as well).

Losing your best player in JJ last year right before the season started didn't exactly help us. Also almost no pass rush and two true freshmen at LB really didn't help our secondary either. Randolph is going to be a beast and Waggner has a great shot of being first or second team All-SEC next year. Our secondary will be solid in 2012.

Fans need to stay away from trying to rank recruiters on the staff. They don't have all the details. Also some members on the staff quite frankly are given more recruiting responsibility because they have less responsibility in running the team. Notice the assistant with the most names attached to him is usually a position coach. It doesn't mean a whole lot.

under appreciated coach.

He's done as good as anyone could considering the talent level we had, and the fact that our DLine couldn't get pressure. If our DLine improves, I will expect more out of secondary. then we can question CTJ. imo

Breaker, do you think the problems with Teague can be fixed from a coaching stand point or is he just not cut out to be a DB? Is it just his mechanics or is it mental as well? He seems to have good speed but just can't cover worth a damn.

I think mlsoft started it all.

mlsoft did not start it -- the performance of our secondary on the field week after week with no improvement over the 2 years he has been here is what started it.

Our secondary is poorly coached. They continually have problems lining up correctly, reading the offensive sets, getting off of blocks, looking back for the ball on vertical routes, getting in position during the play, and only one or two of them seem to understand how to jump a route. They give far too much cushion on the LOS and do not react to the ball well. Very few of them have shown progress during the year or even from year to year and as a unit they progressed hardly at all.

We do not have many kids that could start for LSU or Alabama, but we do have some pretty good athletes that are SEC caliber. Joseph caused some of his own personnel problems and could not identify his starters so as to build cohesion in his secondary. That was evident from the constantly changing lineups every week, and his insistence on playing Teague every game when it was more than evident that Teague was not ready to play in the SEC.

Finally, there was the bottom line. We did not play many decent passing teams this past season, but when we did (see Arky) they burned us alive. Even Alabama, who is hardly a passing team, when they decided to open up the offense a bit, easily picked us apart. The secondary (and Joseph) were fortunate that our opponents did not need to pass on us to win easily -- they did it with the run instead.

Joseph will not be going anywhere, but I very much hope that Shannon will bring in his own guy to coach the secondary and Joseph will be moved to ST.

Whats not to like? He is a nice guy. He is not someone whose leaving would cost us more than perhaps a WR.

Terry Joseph is not the but for cause of our recruiting success. Why is that hard to understand?

Shannon
Barrow
Thompson
Orgeron
Trooper
Frank Wilson
Eddie Gran
even Peter Sirmon

we have had lots.of better recruiters than him lately.

I do not dislike terry and he seems like a good person.

If louisiana ragin cajuns gave him a DC job i do not think we would miss a beat.

You do realize that every "name" on that list was at some point having some dumba$$ questioning their hire, and value because they hadn't made a "name" for themselves yet, right? Joseph is making a good "name" for himself as a recruiter right now. A lot of different recruits, and especially their families have noted him. I don't know why I bother with useless crap like this. You people are obviously to thickheaded to get it.

Think of CTJ like Eddie Gran. CTJ just has not had his chance to appear like an outstanding coach with super players in the secondary. Once he does everyone will change their tune.

let me second that motion again!!!

I know you stated that Joseph cares about the kids off the field as well as on but what else separates him from the rest of the coaches you have dealt with in the recruiting process? Not just at Tenn but other coaches as well.

I disagree that the players in the secondary did not improve. For two years, he has dealt with youth, youth, and more youth. He will have a better chance to "look good" this fall.

Alignment and things like that are usually bigger than the position coach.
