The media relations staff is one of the first groups that new student-athletes meet when they arrive on campus. They fill out the questionnaires that allow us to write their profiles for the website and take their head shots, new orange ties and all...

I sat down with them as a group while they filled out their questionnaires just to learn more about them and to find out the stories we can tell about them...there were three things that stuck out right away.

The first is that they all genuinely like each other. Elite camps, all-star games and visits to campuses allow guys to build bonds before they ever come to campus. Social media and the cell phone in each of their hands make those bonds grow even stronger. By the time they move in to the dorms on campus, they already feel like a family and act like a family.

The second thing that struck me are the personalities in the group. A lot of freshmen are quiet and reserved, but this group was full of personality, and they weren't afraid to show it to us or to each other. A guy like Jack Jones takes over the room when he enters with his energy. Sit him down next to Andrew Butcher and they will go back-and-forth with an incredibly entertaining exchange that will ultimately be settled in their first "Circle of Life" matchup in spring practice. Quinten Dormady and Jauan Jennings both project the confidence and tone that you expect from a quarterback.

The last thing is the maturity and character of the group. Butch Jones has said since arriving at Tennessee that he recruits a certain type of individual to be a Volunteer. That is evident when you meet these guys. They are articulate, engaging, polite, just good to be around. They made our job very easy.

Based upon the videos of the 10 EEs, I happen to agree with Brian Rice. The UTSports.com article is truth and not just more hype about the quality of these young men.

From their interviews, they come across as intelligent and well-spoken as well as giving us a brief taste of personality. In a couple of them, I saw some nice interview footwork to not directly answer a question or sidestep a question because of the way it was asked or the fact that it had been asked him before. I'm certainly impressed with these guys from their interviews and can't wait to see them in action on the field. If I had not known these were freshman, I would have guess they were upperclassmen from how they handled themselves.

I continue to be thoroughly impressed with the types and character of football players that Butch/Staff are recruiting. Similar things can be said about the maturity of the 2013 and 2014 recruiting classes as well. Of course, when you start out with a freshman class in 2013 that includes an athlete as articulate as Josh Dobbs, a high bar is set. GBO!!

Good stuff...Butch is recruiting elite character as well as athletes.

Fulmer was Orange from his bald head to his abused feet... but I'm not sure that even he thought you could recruit talented, high character kids to UT in great numbers. He was always trying to balance the character risks and talent of guys like D Morley and Vinson.

What Jones is doing in recruiting is very, very impressive.

It's nice to know that Tennessee's talent is up there finally with the powers of the SEC and that it's no longer in the middle or bottom of the SEC.

When i read all these things about high character individuals it makes me think that we are either just fortunate, or it is being overblown. When you listen to what recruits say however, they always mention that Butch talks to them about more than football, and cares about them as people.

Butch is taking a different approach. That's how he distinguishes himself, along with his assistants. Not only is getting to know these guys on a personal level helping to build a relationship, it's allowing the staff to really get a feel for what kind of kids they are.

Butch and Co. are known for being relentless on the trail. The strategy probably goes like this:
Get in the door early for elite athletes and pipeline schools.
Get to know who these guys are and what they want.
Identify who are the best kids for the program (position, talent and personality)
Be relentless with those guys and adapt when you have too.

This strategy is clearly paying dividends. We are getting elite level talents, that are also properly raised people. Some people won't last because being a recruit and being on the team are completely different dynamics. Kids will still get into trouble because they are kids that are rockstars in both knoxville and back home. Regardless, Butch is doing a remarkable job, and I couldn't be more excited about the guys he is bringing in.

Fulmer did recruit tons of talented and high character kids in the mid 90s.

Tee Martin, Peerless Price, Al Wilson, Peyton Manning, Fred White, Spencer Riley, Mercedes Hamilton, Shawn Bryson, Travis Stephens, Darwin Walker, Will Overstreet, Joey Kent, Marcus Nash, Bobby Graham, Raynoch Thompson, Steve Johnson, Tori Noel, Terry Fair, Chad Clifton, Phillip Crosby, Jermaine Copeland, Deon Grant....

I could go on and on with those guys, that's just off the top of my head. That's why UT had so much success in the mid 90s, recruiting high talented, motivated, great character kids.
