The story behind that song is pretty messed up. Phil Collins wrote it.

Oh and have you seen "The Hangover"?

"All I'm sayin is, he's still got it!"

Ahh, that song will be a whole lot funnier to you once you see that movie.

Awesome song. Top three best songs from the '80s decade.

Do you like Phil Collins? Are your business cards nicer than mine? :chair:

Yeah. Basically what happened is this. As a child Phil Collins and a friend were swimming. His friend began to drown and for whatever reason Phil was unable to help him. Meanwhile, there was a man not far off who could have helped, but didn't.

Now this next part could be purely a rumor. I had heard that years later, Phil located this guy who didn't help, and sent him tickets to a show. Guy was front row center. Phil sang to song to him, the guy ended up weeping and later that night, killed himself.

From what I've read, I suspect that it is all an urban legend, but that's the story.

There's also no cymbals on that song. IIRC Collins uses no cymbals on the entire album.

The truth, according to Collins, is that "In the Air Tonight"--like most of the songs on his "Face Value" album--deals with his bitterness and frustration over the end of his marriage to his first wife, Andrea.

The hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you or me.

So the mythical event you refer to is nothing more than another case of song lyrics being interpreted too literally.

You were wise to come to us, Chris. Keep asking questions and, together, we may yet see the day ignorance is completely wiped out.

We've been waiting for that moment for all our lives.
