Offensive Explosion
Tennessee's bats are off to a hot start after a season-opening sweep of Western Illinois. The Vols scored 45 runs during their three wins over the Leathernecks, including 19 on Saturday and 23 on Sunday. After one weekend of play, UT leads the SEC and ranks fourth nationally in scoring at 15.0 runs per game.

Other notable offensive achievements from last weekend are listed below:
  • The Vols' 45 runs scored marked the most by a Tennessee team over the course of a three-game series since March 11-13, 2005 against Radford.
  • Sunday's 23-run outing coupled with Saturday's 19-run day gave the Big Orange back-to-back games of 15 or more runs for the first time since 2010.
  • UT's 19 runs on Saturday were the most it had scored in a game since Tony Vitello took over as head coach in 2018, only to be surpassed on Sunday when the Vols scored 23 runs.
  • Tennessee has scored six or more runs in four different innings this season.
  • UT's 19 hits in Sunday's win were the most in a single game since 2016.
  • The Vols hit two home runs in each of their three games last weekend with five different players going yard, led by sophomore infielder Austin Knight with two.
Pitching Staff Off to Solid Start
While the offensive was certainly impressive last weekend, the pitching staff was just as effective, posting a pair of shutouts and holding Western Illinois scoreless over the first 22.1 innings of the season. UT posted back-to-back shutouts to open the season for the second consecutive year.

Other notable pitching stats from last weekend are listed below:
  • UT pitchers held Western Illinois hitters to just 11 hits over the three games (.118 average) and racked up 33 strikeouts while issuing just six walks. 16 of those strikeouts came in Sunday's series finale.
  • All three starting pitchers for Tennessee last weekend were making their first career starts and all three earned wins.
  • Sophomore RHP Chad Dallas threw five shutout innings and allowed just one hit on Friday while junior RHP Chase Wallace tossed 5.2 shutout frames on Saturday, giving up just two hits and striking out six batters.
  • Dallas and Wallace became the second and third pitchers on Tennessee's current roster to not allow a run during their first start with the program, joining Camden Sewell (2019 vs. Middle Tennessee).
  • Junior RHP Jackson Leath got the start and struck out 12 batters in just 4.1 innings of work on Sunday.
Midweek Success Under Vitello
The Vols have been extremely successful in midweek games under Tony Vitello, posting a 23-5 record in such contests since he took over as head coach prior to the 2018 season. UT went 13-1 in midweek games last season, outscoring their opponents 112-36 in those contests.

Successful Debuts
The Big Orange had 11 players make their Tennessee debuts over the weekend.

Junior infielder Liam Spence led all newcomers with four runs scored while posting three hits and three RBI. He also was outstanding defensively while splitting time at shortstop and second base, recording 10 assists, two putouts and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Freshman two-way standout Drew Gilbert also impressed, going 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI at the plate while also striking out the side in one inning of relief.

On the mound, junior RHP Jackson Leath had 12 strikeouts in just 4.1 innings of work on Sunday to earn his first win as a Vol, while Kody Davidson and Mark McLaughlin both tossed two shutout innings over the weekend.

EP pitched an inning on Saturday IIRC.... I imagine he will pitch 2-3 innings and a lot of other pitchers will get some time on the bump.
