The triple option is for teams with inferior talent and no ability to routinely recruit high level talent. That hasn’t been out problem. Finding coaches who can develop that talent has been our problem. Period.
A school of Tennessee’s caliber, a team able to consistently recruit top-fifteen classes and scout the nation for talent, would earn a playoff birth within five years of the option’s inception/installation.
The problem, of course, is that selling recruits on the option is essentially a non-starter when going after the best-of-the-best with NFL aspirations. If you could convince kids to give it a go, which is nearly impossible, the option would be absolutely be a success in Knoxville.
