Just a thought ! I personally love our offense, but I would like to make one comment and a suggestion. I think we definitely need to utilize our tight ends more on offense. We rarely ever seem to throw to a TE. Please explain why, or perhaps I am missing something. I do not consider myself as a great offensive minded person, just consider this as terribly under utilized !!!!

Our TEs last year accounted for 37 catches for a little over 400 yards & 4 TDs, which was 15% of all the passes caught. We rarely formationed with 2 or 3 TEs at the same time, so our TE was typically 1 of 5, or 20% of eligible receivers on a given play.

I think Heupel & Golesh want to target our veteran TEs Warren and Fant a little more this year. We’re not deep at TE with really only Campbell and Browder behind the veterans. If Warren and Fant can stay healthy, I think TE production will go up this year, but not by leaps and bounds. Let’s see how much we use 2 TE formations this year.

Passes to a TE typically go 5-30 yards.

In this offense, passes to a WR typically go 5-75 yards.

There are only a certain number of plays in a game,. Every play you choose in one category necessarily takes a play away from another category.

I think our coaching staff are focused on winning ball games. They will score, over and over again, as effectively and efficiently as possible.

I'm 100% behind them, whether that means TEs get more passes, or fewer.

I like our TE’s, but they’re not all conference caliber players like some of our WR’s. Every coach talks about getting the ball in their playmaker’s hands .

This. Every coach would love to have a Kyle Pitts and throw to them every play but reality is you throw to your best play maker who is open. Our TEs are used a lot in blocking duty and they have to earn their receptions.

May have something to do with route running and/or catching the ball (or lack thereof). When the TEs do these two things pretty well, you could see them have passes come their way pretty often.

When most Tight Ends catch the ball and fall forward, it's a gain of 3-4 yards without the TE moving their feet.

Just seems natural to involve them in the game more in terms of targeting them. LOVE the TE. What would Brady be without Gronk ? (hate both, btw)

Great answer!

Coach Golesh has hit on this several times during fall camp.
Most times the TE is doing one of two things - getting open in a short field as a check down, or safety valve, for the play or actively blocking in pass protection or run blocking.
That's why Heupel and Golesh like to recruit bigger TEs that might not be as 'quick' as other receivers.
They tend to see the TE as more of a 'Running Back Extension', which fits well in the up tempo scheme.

Golesh has also stated during camp that Fant and Warren both have come a long way since last season, so I would look for even more involvement from both this year.

Stay tuned. I think you will see that this season.

I agree, the offense was new in 2021, Heup started late, there was a limit to how much could be installed at the time. Mention was made earlier in this year how we would see new wrinkles. So, so, so, for now:

What do you mean utilize, exactly?

They both played a ton of snaps...

I rewatched a few games from last season. I'm not going to look up stats to back this up, but our TEs weren't ignored last season IMO. Warren, in particular, had alot of designed plays intended for him, particularly in the red zone, some of which we scored on. Fant seemed to be used more as a fullback with occasionally getting the chance to catch it in the flat on play action misdirection.

To put it into perspective, those numbers are pretty close to what Jason Witten produced his senior season.

I believe that was a product of the situation. They only implemented a portion of the offense last year. I think you will see the throws spread around a lot this year. The opposing defense will look very confused for most of our games.
