Number One LSU with halfback Billy Cannon (Heisman winner and number one draft pick) lost to Tennessee 14 to 13, Near end of game going for 2 points to win Billy Cannon is stopped short of goal line by mainly Tennessee tailback Billy Majors. After beating LSU lost to Ole Miss 37 to nothing, Kentucky 20 to nothing, and Vanderbilt 14 to nothing. Billy Cannon all through his life claimed that he scored on 2 point try !! PS - Billy Majors later died in tragic automobile accident when he was assistant coach at Tennessee in early sixties.

If I remember correctly, it was Charlie Severance who was the main tackler, not Billy Majors.

It was a team tackle by several players - Look at the picture from Sports Illustrated ...Majors was a key part in stopping Billy Cannon.
Regardless great moment for Tennessee football !!!

That team should have been 7-2-1 at the very least going to a bowl game. I could see a loss to 10-1 Ole Miss but not blowout losses to 4-6 Kentucky or 5-3-2 Vanderbilt.

you mean even in 1959 if the team took an opponent too lightly they stand a chance of losing to an inferior team, some things never change.

This was the first game I saw as a Tennessee fan. My Dad had season tickets for 60 years. I was 8 years old and remember that day like it was yeaterday. GBO, VFL
