First question: What is this Substack effort? A vanity blog? An attempt to establish a presence for some reason? A place to vent? Don't know, but purpose matters in assessing context, and Brittany hasn't been forthcoming about her purpose.
Second question: How many conversations has she had with Coach Caldwell since Kim was hired? Any? If so, say that. If not, she's throwing shade at the current LV coach as a "LVFL" without ever trying to either understand or help. Not a good look.
Reasons to question her judgment/good faith:
Taking a quote out of context.
Or, three, exactly the way the coach explained it -- her extremely high standards for what "ready" would means. Just like every other coach in the country. Go back and watch the video. That's what she said. No need to generate alternative meanings; she said what she meant. Reminds me of the old joke about Bear Bryant in pre-season with his best teams and that he'd always find something to be concerned about, even if it was the quality of his back-up punter. Taking a quote out of context like this shows one of two things: bias or sloppiness -- she read a headline and didn't dig deeper, then hung her argument on her. Weak. If this were a debate, rebuttal would be brutal.
Living in the past (and in isolation):
She also claims you can't live and die by the three? Really? Where's she been? The best shots are an open three or a layup, and if the latter is at all contested, the three is the better choice. Lots of missed layups.
And Pat, great as she was, never coached in anything close to the current era. How are people "in rebounding position" if you're play a 5-out style?
And body language, especially interpreting an unnamed players "eye-roll"? Dubious. Extremely dubious. What is she saying? That Kim has lost this team's respect. Okay, then come out and say it and give some real evidence. Does it show a lack of respect that Coop has clearly improved her game since last year? That five freshman are all developing? That Barker, despite a tendency to "act out" on court sometimes, seems to be settling in?
Ignoring progress and counter examples:
And what about the one-on-one ball she says there's too much of but which actually seems to be getting better? Kim has described multiple ways she is coaching that in practice. What does Brittany want Kim to do? Yell at them ? Sit them on the bench (in direct contradiction of her coaching philosophy)?
And she talks about no player being bigger than the jersey and doesn't mention the Ruby situation? Bias. Clear confirmation bias. Judgment is the character strength that lets one instinctively see both sides of a question -- and Brittany isn't displaying it.
All in all, I'm reminded of
Theodore Roosevelt's, "The Man in the Arena."
