Tennessee Lady Vol News

And did she lie in her new post? 😩🄓. I’ve learned to stop getting excited about wins against sorry teams. I get excited about seeing improvement in championship winning habits. I haven’t seen those. It’ll get exposed when we play the teams that move the needle. The bright spots are the freshmen, especially Mia. I hope she’s had her lightbulb! I wasn’t a fan at first, but she’s slowly winning me over!

Is Brittany interested in coaching or something, I can’t see how publicly saying all of this will help in any way honestly. I can see it coming from fans, but a LVFL?!

I don't think she lied in her post, but I also kind of hate this attention economy in which I think people really are just trying to get clicks.

I don’t think she lied, but I also am genuinely curious on if she was willing to say all this to their face like she is online. lol

IMO, this is not true. It’s her opinion and she is certainly welcome to share it via any platform.

It reads exactly like something you would see posted on this forum. She’s right about one thing national television sees this team.
And every single game broadcast crew week in and week out is raving about the talent on this Lady Vols team.
Coach Caldwell has stacked talent in 20 months that hasn’t been seen ever by a new coach/staff.
GBOšŸŠ.

Oh! I can kick the hornet's nest šŸ˜‚
Hope the link works!

First question: What is this Substack effort? A vanity blog? An attempt to establish a presence for some reason? A place to vent? Don't know, but purpose matters in assessing context, and Brittany hasn't been forthcoming about her purpose.

Second question: How many conversations has she had with Coach Caldwell since Kim was hired? Any? If so, say that. If not, she's throwing shade at the current LV coach as a "LVFL" without ever trying to either understand or help. Not a good look.

Reasons to question her judgment/good faith:
Taking a quote out of context.

When a coach says, out loud, ā€œWe are not ready for SEC play,ā€ it lands two ways.
One: as a warning.
Two: as an indictment.

Or, three, exactly the way the coach explained it -- her extremely high standards for what "ready" means. Just like every other coach in the country. Go back and watch the video. That's what she said. No need to generate alternative meanings; she said what she meant. Reminds me of the old joke about Bear Bryant in pre-season with his best teams and that he'd always find something to be concerned about, even if it was the quality of his back-up punter. Taking a quote out of context like this shows one of two things: bias or sloppiness -- she read a headline and didn't dig deeper, then hung her argument on it. Weak. If this were a debate, rebuttal would be brutal.

Living in the past (and in isolation):
There is too much one-on-one basketball. Shots going up before teammates even cross half court. Threes are launched with no one in rebounding position.
This isn’t the team basketball philosophy I learned under Pat Summitt.
This is pickup basketball.
She also claims you can't live and die by the three? Really? Where's she been? The best shots are an open three or a layup, and if the latter is at all contested, the three is the better choice. Lots of missed layups.

And Pat, great as she was, never coached in anything close to the current era. How are people "in rebounding position" if you're play a 5-out style?

And body language, especially interpreting an unnamed players "eye-roll"? Dubious. Extremely dubious. What is she saying? That Kim has lost this team's respect? Okay, then come out and say it and give some real evidence. Does it show a lack of respect that Coop has clearly improved her game since last year? That five freshman are all developing? That Barker, despite a tendency to "act out" on court sometimes, seems to be settling in?

Ignoring progress and counter examples:

And what about the one-on-one ball she says there's too much of but which actually seems to be getting better? Kim has described multiple ways she is coaching that in practice. What does Brittany want Kim to do? Yell at them ? Sit them on the bench (in direct contradiction of her coaching philosophy)?

And she talks about no player being bigger than the jersey and doesn't mention the Ruby situation? Bias. Clear confirmation bias. Judgment is the character strength that lets one instinctively see both sides of a question -- and Brittany isn't displaying it.

All in all, I'm reminded of Theodore Roosevelt's, "The Man in the Arena."

Man. You said it better than I could. I agree with all of this. It read to me the same way. Like she was slighting our coach because she doesn’t coach like Pat. Lol. These LVFLs & some fans gotta take those Pat-colored glasses off sometimes. She’s not Pat. Never gonna be & never should be. She’s her. One of the fastest coaches to 250 wins in her first 10 yrs. She’s obviously doing something right. & to insinuate she’s not holding a standard? She came back 4 days after giving birth. Her players respect her. They may not respect themselves sometimes. Or the refs (which id just about guess is where the eye rolling was coming from) idk.. didn’t see it. But players have different body language & you can read into it all you want but I guarantee we don’t know what their body language means. CKC said she clips up body language & shows to her teams. So I guess people will always see what they want. & infer what they want.

Umm, seems to me you made some REALLY good points that I missed. Thanks!

The only good that will come out of Brittany’s efforts will belong to opposing coaching staffs. It’ll be super great for them to be able to point to an LVFL who thinks the current program sucks.

She should include her home address at the bottom of every missive so that recruiting coordinators can send her ā€œThank Youā€ flowers.

Teddy… excellent. I was presented a framed copy on parchment by our office manager many years ago. She had signed, dated and made note of the situation that inspired the recognition.

Damn son you're good. You sure you didn't forget to go into work as a reporter ? Seriously none of the reports dig into both sides of a situation or opinions or try to explain the situation.

Thanks for the kind words. I was undergrad in journalism, then law school and a few years practicing before moving on to other things. Though lawyers take a lot of abuse, right now I'm more disappointed in "journalists." As Ben Rhodes said, "The average reporter we talk to is 27 years old, and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns. That’s a sea change. They literally know nothing.ā€ Sports reporters aren't setting a higher standard!

Not exactly accurate. Cora Hall, the reporter for the Knoxville News Sentinel, is excellent and asks all the hard questions. She's by far the best LV beat reporter we've ever had

Well Retrovol does it better and doesn't even get to ask a question šŸ˜‰ Seriously he's actually getting most of the answers doing the work with analytics and no coach speech. I'm just glad the tweaking or changes ever how you want to look at it is working. Still would like to see 100% buy in from all the players. Hopefully by tournament time everything is where she wants it. If we can pull off a big upset on the road would do wonders for team chemistry.

Give the players some slack. What they are buying into has totally changed. I haven’t really seen them as not bought in, just confused. Now I think they’re just relieved to be playing in a more logical way that they can process.

It’s so interesting that this is happening in the second year instead of the first.

The vibes seem so much better, but winning also covers a multitude sins, cures all, etc, etc. it has to be particularly beneficial though for the freshmen and transfers who have not had extended time in a unique system.

I give the staff great credit for the reset during the recent break. That could have gone either way.

Also I imagine the players are happy to get to play in a way thats more instinctual to them and to get to play longer consecutive stretches and get in rythmn.
