Tennessee Lady Vol News

Good line but her predictions have sucked tonight...

Hmm no chance Florida? Guess they will have a hard time living that one down. Then Arkansas squashes Kentucky on their home court. One thing I have learned about this years SEC every game is a challenge and there is a chance in everyone of them for the team that comes to play.

Wow. Big lesson-learning day for Andraya. Her "going to the club after a breakup with a downgrade" was hilarious when she said it, but dang! There'll be Arky/Calipari fans who will never let her live that one down. Bless her heart.

And the Tennessee loss prediction? I don't know of anyone who would have believed it possible the Vols could win even by 1 without their two main stars, much less by 20. I imagine that surprised even Coach Barnes.

It was a classic example of defensive effort I have not seen many teams reach this season. Players don't always play at the level they are capable of on defense. They love scoring and offense. Actually having the two players out had everyone locked in at an intensity that coaches are always hoping their team will reach. After the game they talked about being disrespected by Florida when they lost down there. They were ready to play and that is winning over half the battle.

Yeah but the other half of the battle is having special defensive talent like Mashack and Z have. Seems like I'm always making this argument lately, but everyone wants to be that intense and locked in on D. Why would anyone not play D at their level of capability? You think they're holding back?

Truth is, defense is also a talent and not many have the physical talent and the mental discipline. Coop is an example of someone w Mashack level talent, but not near Mashack level focus. Most don't have near that level physical talent to just flip an effort switch and get there.

Also, the Vols are a great defensive team, but they don't stop everyone like that. Complete shut downs like yesterday are sweet but pretty rare. That effort output is hard to sustain.

Bottom line, I don't see us suddenly being a dominate D team just bc we decide to. We have to learn to, and possibly wait for that talent upgrade we're living for next year.

Too bad she didn't mean UK went to the club with a downgrade at the coach level; he's good, but it's tough there. We know that from the women's side. Personally, I hope that applies to bama in football, NC in men's bball, and, esp, to UConn in women's basketball

💯 glv98.

I live for the possibility that the light bulb will eventually go on for Cooper and she will learn to focus, 'cause she has moments of brilliance already and she is often out in LaLa Land mentally. If she were ever to develop the ability to maintain focus, OMG. She'd have no ceiling.

And good defense is exhausting. I can remember from when I played that, mentally, when on offense it seemed less physically tiring to move, and I think it was because offensive possessions, particularly for scorers are way more, well, FUN. It's easier to have fun.

But defense is just WORK. Yes, you get an adrenaline rush from a great defensive stop, but for the most part it (in my own experience) is ten times more physically and mentally draining. But mostly physically. Typically the thighs and calves don't burn on a player on offense, but tenacious defense is grueling.

When our team has done the grueling work it has usually paid off for them. But it's really, really, really hard to do that for 40. Seriously, if we could do it for 30 we might not have even a single loss right now.

We have several players athletic enough just not inclined to spend the time like a guy like Mashack did to get to where he is defensively. Spearman could and should be a tremendous defensive talent maybe not to guard true fives, but she could take a three four player out of the game. Boyd is going to be a great defensive player just needs more experience. Coop is there just likes to take to many chances and sometime loses her position. Latham has some defensive talent. Spencer can play well enough as well. Whitehorn has the athletic ability. Those six could be a solid defensive group and beyond those players we just need to get better with recruiting.

Big difference between a "team giving you a win" and "coaching a win"
Kellie and Holly learned this the hard way

The only thing funnier than Andraya’s fabulous joke was the Kentucky fans booing and filing out of the exits early like they do in football. Draya didn’t joke that KY would lose: she joked that Cal better not lose. Two great moments yesterday. Best of all was the third, the beatdown the Vols — with too starters out and seven scholarship players total — put on Florida. A really happy day!

And now… all eyes turn to our LVs. Let’s go! 🍊

As I predicted winning by just five over Missouri dropped us in the Net from 11 to 14. Not a bad drop, but when you don't beat teams your supposed to beat by double digits you pay in the Net. Good news is Iowa win over USC moved that game back up to a quad one win for us. We now have three quad one wins this season. Hopefully they will all stay there. Plenty of opportunity for several more as right now UConn, LSU, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Alabama are all quad one games.

Elite! Talaysia Cooper All-SEC 1st Team and National Defensive Player of the Year Watch!

Brandon Clay is one of the top basketball analysts. He knows the game.

Personally, I think it would be a pretty bad pick if she was given National Defensive Player of the Year. To use a baseball analogy, she is a HR/K defensive player. She puts her teammates in a bad defensive rotations with a lot of the low success/out of position/lazy defensive plays she makes. But she has amazingly quick hands, long arms and elite athleticism so she ends up with lots of highlight plays (steals and blocks). You can make highlight plays and also stay in proper defensive rotation. Just watch Jamai play. If she would commit to being a disciplined defender like Jamai then she could absolutely develop into a National Defensive Player of the Year type player.

Net took a hit (#11 to #14) due to margin of victory against an unranked team, even on the road. Gonna have to buckle down and batten down the hatches. Geno has the psych ops on full blast.
Chuckie, have you noticed in the past 2-3 weeks Uconn has been employing a full court press for stretches? I find that interesting. Mizzou broke it out also, to some success once they did.

our lack of 3 pt shooting has really lowered the avg scoring of the LVs
Sec defenses are diff than OOC defenses. It’s still a defense first league while Staley and Mulkey and now Vic are around. It’s why it is so interesting to watch a new approach enter the league under Caldwell. The conference needed that new approach to shake it up a bit. Good for the sport, interesting for the SEC. Based upon early results and all of the super close games, it has a place long term if she gets the right players and can get them all under her control.

Coop needs to bend to her coaching in some ways.

Absolutely. Imitation being the most sincere form of flattery. 🤙🏼
It's not imitation, it's preparation specifically for Tennessee. Remember when the CT fan scoffed at me when I said he'd be preparing well ahead of our game? He'd rather eat a sh!t sandwich fresh from the ass of a man in prison than he would get beat by first-year coach Kim Caldwell. I guaranTEE you he's been obsessing over this game, and if he says he hasn't been, he's lying.

Case closed.
