The totals: 119 plays covering 962 yards, a whopping 8.1 yards per play (the Vols average 5.6 yards per play overall). Thirteen of 29 drives ended with a touchdown, 11 of those 13 covered 40+ yards, and the Vols didn't settle: the only field goal attempt in this list was the final play of the South Carolina game. And if you want explosiveness, here's what the Vols have done in the fourth quarter of these games, all of them with the outcome in doubt:

Appalachian State: Josh Dobbs to Josh Malone 67 yard TD
Virginia Tech: Dobbs 27 yard TD run
Ohio: Jalen Hurd 28 yard run on 3rd and 1
Ohio: Dobbs to Malone 20 yard TD
Florida: Dobbs to Jauan Jennings 67 yard TD
Florida: Dobbs to Malone 42 yard TD
Florida: Dobbs 22 yard run
Georgia: Hail Mary
Texas A&M: Alvin Kamara 36 yard run on 4th and 1
Texas A&M: Dobbs to Tyler Byrd for 43 yards
South Carolina: John Kelly 34 yard run
South Carolina: Dobbs to Jennings for 25 yards
South Carolina: Dobbs to Jennings for 23 yards

There are plenty of different names in that list, and both big runs and big pass plays. Dobbs in the fourth quarter this year is 35-of-55 (63.6%) for 581 yards (10.6 yards per attempt) with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. His eight fourth quarter passing touchdowns are tied with Davis Webb of Cal and Luke Falk of Washington State for the most in the nation.

For me, all these 4th Qtr stats just scream of unrealized potential.

If only we'd played as well in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters all year. We'd probably be sitting at 8-1 right now, ranked around #5.

Team 120 has done what team 119 could not do and that is finish games, so lets be real.

At the same time, team 119 could start a game better than team 120. That is what stinks so bad about this season. After last year, I really thought we'd be hitting on all cylinders this year.

Now they're in the fourth quarter of the season, maybe they can put up the best stats in the nation from here on out.

Maybe team 121 can do what neither of 119 and 120 could do and play 4 quarters of quality football every game. This year Butch's mantra was "Where can we find 25 points?". Will next year be "Where can we find 50 points?" Next years needs to be "Start fast, finish strong."

1) We play our best late in games when the other team's energy is flagging.

Our strength and conditioning program must be excellent.

2) Our team is riddled with injuries.

Our strength and conditioning program must be terrible.

Anybody else as confused as I am by this whole season?

This team is completely bipolar in its inconsistency, not just game to game or quarter to quarter, but often play to play.

I have all the confidence in the world that the Vols will need this 4th quarter offense come Saturday against Kentucky, don't you?

Coaching sucks. Ultra conservative play calling for 2-3 quarters. Run the same 6-8 plays that everyone is looking for. Rely on a depleted defense. Then spread things out and open up the offense in the 4th when you're down. Its bad coaching. If you dont have faith in Dobbs ability to throw, then replace him or run more spread option in the first three quarters like you're forced to do in the fourth. Is this really that hard to analyze? I know we want to be generous to this coaching staff and give them time to succeed. But, watching a team stick to an outdated play book and refusing to adapt your system to the talent you have is the hallmark of bad coaching. Further add to this with recruiting tons of 3 star talent to play against SEC teams that have more 5 star players starting than we have on our roster. This adds to our predicament. This was supposed to be CBJ's break out year. Now that we tanked 3 losses - next year will be that year. I'm hopeful, but not going to bet the farm on it. Serious changes in mentality, attitude, and coaching scheme must come quick or the only stat we will lead the nation in is 4th quarter offense. That is not a good stat. Best 4th quarter defense - good stat. Most running yards in 4th - good stat. That means we have the lead and are holding the lead. Best 4th Q offense - terrible stat. Time for us to start being realistic and hold folks accountable. If other SEC teams can change coaches and improve recruiting and win consistently why dont we?

Not trying to be negative here but this is not only a sign of us being behind in the fourth but also the coaching staff mentality in general.

Many games we coach too conservative. Examples are App State, Ohio, Vandy (Butch first two years) etc...

When the team is behind the play calling mimics a winning approach. The only game this year that has been coached to win from start to finish is A and M. Other examples would be Georgia during Butchs first year.

Team 120 has done what team 119 could not do and that is finish games, so lets be real.

Then, you can say Team 119 did what Team 120 hasn't been able yet to do, and that is start strong(er).

The point is -- each team had (to this point) a profound deficiency.

I would rather start strong, remain strong, and lose a close one because of good strong competition (than lose to SCe and or have to risk it all on a come-from-behind on App State home opener, and etc).

Means they're behind in the fourth a bunch.

Still gotta make plays.

What it tells me is we have bad coaches. They only open up the playbook when they have no choice.

The conservative nature of Butch Jones will be his death nail. He needs to coach like he's down from the start.
