I believe 2016 is going to be special. Those worried about Dobbs and the receivers are underestimating the value of a deep, experience OLINE (Anyone remember J James, Stone, and Fulton's freshman and soph year?!!?). Poor oline play and injured receivers make it very difficult for a QB to find his rhythm. Anyhow, losing dobbs, hurd, and kamara will hurt in 2017 and I wanted to do a personal analysis of how the team will stack up based on losses of Srs and key Juniors so I ranked position groups.

Quarterback:
2015: 3
2016: 1
2017: 2

Runningback:
2015: 2
2016: 1
2017: 3

Receiver/TE:
2015: 3
2016: 2
2017: 1

Offensive Line:
2015: 3
2016: 2
2017: 1

Defensive Line
2015: 3
2016: 2
2017: 2

Linebackers
2015: 3
2016: 2
2017: 1

DBs/S
2015: 2
2016: 2
2017: 1

Special Teams:
2015: 2
2016: 1
2017: 3

Total Points:

2015: 21
2016: 13
2017: 14

It's going to be important for Jones to keep pulling in top 5 running backs in every class like UGA and Bama does. If we get a top 10 class this year, and Jones continues to show the ability to develop players, then we are going to be a top 10 team every year.

OP what does the (1, 2, 3) rankings mean?

His personal ranking. 1 is the best, 2 is next best, and 3 is the worst.

So for the running backs group, he says:
2015 - 2
2016 - 1
2017 - 3

Meaning the 2016 RBs will be the best (1), the 2015 RBs will be 2nd best (2), and the 2017 RBs will be the worst (3) in regard to the 3-year span he's discussing.

He did it for all groups and at the end totaled up the points to give a total team ranking (in his predictive opinion).

He is ranking the position groups of the '15 vs '16 vs '17 roster. The total points at the end I believe are supposed to show that there will not be much drop off from a talent perspective of the overall team (least amount of point is desired).

Basically saying we're better this year than the other two years.
2. All the problems in the passing game are actually on the o-line.
3. We need to recruit.... good.

But his way is much fancier :)

Our Dline could be better in 2017 than 2016.

It's about how the Vols stack up rather than what our opponents are doing.

And yes we are trending up so if you add 2018 into the mix it could make 2016 seem like a weak team, and that's just silly.

Go Vols!

The measuring stick is inadequate to the task.

A lot can be hidden between the number "1" and the number "3".

For instance (purely hypothetically), if the 2017 WR group is 40% more productive, the OL is also 40% better, the QB play is equally good both years, the RBs are 5% worse, and the TEs are 5% worse. That sounds like a heck of an improved offense, overall.

But a 1 to 3 scale only shows WR going from 2 to 1 ... OL from 2 to 1 ... QB from 2 to 2 (no change), the RB from 1 to 2, and the TE from 1 to 2. Looks by that yardstick to be a wash. When in fact the Offense is going to get about 30%-35% better.

Its kinda like giving an artist a blue crayon, and red crayon, and a green crayon to do your family portrait, and telling him he can't even mix the colors together.

So can you tell us how our recruiting class will end. This could change completely by next year.
