Tennessee's defense hasn't looked great at times, and they've given up a lot of yards, but the Vols currently rank 5th in the SEC in scoring defense (which ultimately is the most important stat of them all) at 21.9 points per game. Considering the tempo that our offense plays with, I think that's solid.

We're also second in the SEC in rushing yards, behind only Georgia.

I saw a post or tweet earlier in the week that noted this was the best Tennessee scoring defense in several years. Did anyone see that stat or have that post/tweet handy?

That's crazy. I think the extreme busts in coverage keep a lot of us from seeing the positives, because they are backbreaking to getting stops. Walk in TDs where the guy was covered and we do something nonsensical.

That’s more than an 8-point improvement from 2020 (30.1 PPG) with a D that, on paper, isn’t as good.

Edit: Plus our offensive pace now vs then isn’t in the same stratosphere.

Defense is surprisingly good in a number of defensive stats.

Posted this yesterday...

Rush defense has significantly improved from 2021 to 2022, 148 YPG in 2021 to 104 YPG in 2022.

Pass defense has regressed. 273 YPG in 2021 to 288 YPG in 2022.

They have gone from 56th in turnover margin in 2021 to 6th in turnover margin in 2022.

Scoring defense has gone from 31 PPG in 2021 to 21 PPG IN 2022.

There are issues with the defense but I think they have taken significant strides under Banks.

Far too soon to be pulling the plug on him and he probably deserves more credit than he has been receiving based on the improvement from Year 1 to Year 2. JMO.

2015-16 was the last season that was better (20.8 PPG) and we could break that year if we do well these last 2 games. Please don’t make me look back again. I saw a whole lot of 30+ years. My eyes!

I recall all offseason. All I kept hearing was if the defense could take a step forward and get just a few stops on 3rd down, look for the team to be much improved because the offense would carry the team. The defense in my view has done more than that especially in the run D. So regardless to what the stats may say I think the defense has done more than what was expected that’s why we are looking 11&1 down a barrel.

Only 2019 and 2015 were better since 2009.

We play a very aggressive defense which is suspect to long pass plays at times when a blitz fails. We don't have talent in secondary to win a lot of 1-on-1 matchups as well.

However, our defense is good enough to win games. Frankly, the defense wasn't the letdown in our loss in Athens.

It's the D-Line. They are flat out destroying the opposition's O-line routinely. They have some occasional busts, but they are really disruptive and don't quit on plays. Best D-line we've had in years.

Nah. People are seeing what they want to see, and complaining accordingly. We all knew before the season that we're not a top flight defensive unit. Our kids have fought hard and won every game except one. They deserve a lot of credit for what they've actually done on the field.

That is also our best recruited area for next season, they could be downright destructive next season. Secondary better shape up though. Need to raid the transfer portal.

I'll take our run defense every year. Our pass defense numbers become skewed because of our offensive output. Teams have to not only take more shots down field, going for it on 4th down has kept several drives alive.

Yep. When I look at the SEC passing D stats we're middle of the pack giving up 10 TDs tied at 8th with the Gators. Bama has given up 11. We all know where 5 of those came from. Missouri with 9, UK 6, LSU 8...all these great SEC passing Ds manhandled by the Vols.

What’s even funnier is we scorched 3 of the top 4 defenses 😂

I want another shot at UGA on a neutral field bad.
