I love old time Tennessee. I remember as a boy the 1956 Tennessee win 6 to 0 over Georgia Tech- a defensive war. now just a few stats comparing 2012 and 2016.
Rushing per game SEC:
2012= 215 yds 2016= 296 yds
Total defense per game SEC:
2012= 490 yds 2016= 525 yds
Worst statistical game defense ever:
Missouri 2016..
First downs 41
Total yds: 743..
I love Tennessee and acknowledge all the injuries but something is wrong to have this type of Tennessee defense
the new leader as the worst Tennessee defense ever !!!

I disagree. Watching the games, Shoop is clearly going with a bend don't break strategy given all the injuries. The difference is the red zone defense has been outstanding and it works.

So let me get this straight. Shoop plans to let the UK QB gash us for 70+ yards on the first play of the game and tackle him in the red zone. And his plan is to let Missouri gash us all day long only to have them fumble the ball through the end zone for a touch back.

Seriously though, he is not going with a bend but don't break strategy. He's trying to figure out a way to stop the run and hasn't figured it out yet with the players he has on the field.

I'm usually optimistic about everything and agree I care more about wins and there is a possibility of a 10 win season but the defense is absolute garbage. The only two teams to run for over 400 yards and not win are Kentucky and Missouri if I'm not mistaken.

Injuries or not it's garbage.

This is it! UT can not afford anymore injuries, keep'em between the 20s and let them kick FGs vs. 6. I like this, and I have said this once already, the only stat I follow is the W, everything else is meaningless. Let's say UT had 800 yards of offense and Mizz had 500, but we still lost.........hmmm. who cares? the win is what we want. I would give Bama 700 yards of offense and UT winning by 1 point ALL DAY LONG.

Go Vols!!

You got it! but his shelf is empty for the the DL, and it all starts there.

While Missouri and Kentucky gaining such record breaking yardage is terrible, it isn't by mistake that they came away with way less points than they should have.

He can't stop the run without completely exposing the backend of the defense. Once the other team is in the red zone, you have the back line to help you. He can be more aggressive in the box because there's less field to cover.

It isn't so much a bend don't break strategy, but I do think he's playing the percentages by attempting to prevent the big plays and forcing the other team to drive the field.

Trying to prevent the big play?

Let me ask this question - how many games have we lost this season due to our defense?

I would argue zero. (Of course, the Alabama game was a total loss in all phases, but you can't even pin that one on the defense.) We lost at Texas A&M and South Carolina due to turnovers.

Am I happy with the defense the last couple of games? Of course not (nobody is). But, as long as we're winning (and we are), I for one am not complaining.

Go Vols!

So rather than play good, sound, fundamental defense and get off the field as soon as possible, Shoop prefers to let offenses completely gash his defense up the middle, around the perimeter and over the top of his DBs....with the idea that once they've (very quickly) gotten into the red zone, then he'll call different schemes to keep teams from scoring......even though teams are routinely scoring to the tune of 36 points per game in SEC play. Do I have that right?

The difference between 2012 and 2016 is the 2012 defense allowed numbers like that fielding a mostly healthy unit. Our 2016 unit is starting or has started 3rd and 4th stringers at numerous positions.

So what you're really comparing is hey, our 2012 defense is as good as our 2016 3rd team defense.

Yea...2012 we were dead last in D in terms of points per game at 35.7 (471.3 ypg)...this year were 9th in scoring D giving up 27.8 points per game (446.2 ypg)...

So the D is bad but not as bad as 2012...

We lost 3 interior lineman. Guess what we Mizzou did? Run it right up the gut.

Yea, we lost 3 of out 4 DTs...but we also lost Alexis Johnson (hip pointer) who was suppose to challenge for a starting job...so we are down 4 of our top 5 DTs...

But the good news is we played without JRM so the younger LBs got playing time.

I have been upset with Shoop this year. Very upset as a matter of fact. But, I also realize that catastrophic injuries have given him basically nothing to work with. People can yammer on and on about depth and whatnot but there are very few teams in CF that could sustain the amounts of injuries we have had and not lose a step. If anyone wants o counter these arguments with injuries dont matter that much are just blindly ignorant. I wasnt one who crowned Shoop the best DC in the country before coming here. I think some of you put the cart way before the horse.

So, lets assume we all think Shoop needs to go (I know we dont). I would love to hear the realistic replacements.
