It’s simple. Larger fan bases mean they will repost on their message boards = more clicks. Requires no work at all. That’s why USC, ND, UTx and UTn are normally on these preseason lists.
FPI is analytic-based...this is not an espn reporter's opinion piece.

LOL, espn's preseason fpi is determined by a 10,000 run bayesian simulation that uses historical data as the basis of its predictive model, and updates through the season as the games are played and new data is generated.

Considering that the bayesian model only works to increase the degree of belief in the conditional probability of a particular outcome when you add in new data to the model along with the historical data, the preseason fpi is just a fancy guess based of of last seasons numbers.

Yup...think I saw OU with #1 offense lmao. Can't even account for losing all that offensive production? Lol

It doesn't take into account attrition, coaching changes, injuries, nothing really until you give the model current data to run against the simulation. This was 2019's preseason FPI:

We go into Norman and win, watch out, because it will probably mean our defense is beginning to play very good. Our defense will keep us in (maybe) every single game this year, might stumble one or two weekends.

Our offense, regardless who's at QB, should put up 21 a game (minimum) consistently. We do that, and our defense plays really well, we will have a great season (hopefully).
