Tennessee Basketball Practice Highlights - October 3rd, 2019

Pember is quite agile and has a sweet stroke. Plavsic is going to be a load and also moves nicely on the perimeter. I think Coach has some very interesting pieces to use in different ways, not to mention that Kent (I think) looked like he knew what he was doing with the ball in his hands. Encouraging.

Almost everybody that Barnes recruits is a very good ball handler. Even Derrick Walker was good with it. Pons might be the weakest link. Maybe Fulk as well, but that could be because he hasn't caught the ball as well after the injuries to his off hand (wrist and elbow).

I've been saying for a long time that losing Bone and not adding a pure point guard isn't as big of a deal when everybody on the floor is a very good ball handler.

I expect to see rapid ball movement as the strategy on offense. They'll play a very fast pace, but different from simply running like Westhead's Loyola-Marymount teams. Every player could touch the ball a couple of times on most possessions. Moving the ball is a great way to wear down opponents and I don't know why so many teams at this level aren't more disciplined instead and stand around dribbling out possessions so often.

One thing I noticed was Pember being used as a pick and roll ball handler instead of the screener.

Plavsic also looks very agile for his height.

Hoops Notes: New-look Vols dealing with injuries

We do have a couple injuries right now.
James has a minor hip injury and Gaines is out with a torn ligament in his thumb.

Damn, Kent and Fulk look stout.

Great to see the offensive work.

Barnes said today that Pember has missed almost every practice with a foot injury, he was out there in this video but I took that as a sign he’s likely to redshirt. Of course if this news about Gaines is true and he’s out for any significant amount of time that may not be possible.

I was at practice yesterday. Plavsic completely changed my perspective on him. Finally seeing him on a court and being active. I believe he can be a big contributor this season. He's inexperienced and makes a lot of mistakes, but that size and athletic ability cover up a lot of them.

I thought that wed seen some clips of Pember working out with team? They literally just started official practice so how much could he have missed? Long time to go yet.

Unfortunately, a torn thumb ligament is a very bad thing for any athlete. Hate to see that.
