Three years ago, Bobby Petrino took over as head coach of the Arkansas football team. That team had gone 8-4 the year before under Houston Nutt and although the fanbase was divided between the Nutt-Haters and the Nutt-Huggers, the program was not suffering from all of the controversy that plagued Tennessee upon Coach Dooley's arrival.

The first season the Hogs went 5-7 and missed a bowl altogether. However, they installed a program, established some continuity on the staff, and brought a divided team together. Still the fanbase was split between the Nutt supporters and those who wanted him outl

Last year they went 8-5 and won the Liberty Bowl. Most of the Nutt-Huggers grew quiet.

This year they are playing in the Sugar Bowl. The fan base is totally united behind the new staff.

All of this improvement came without the good recruiting classes that the Vols have enjoyed, and without the numerous other advantages that Tennessee has over Arkansas.

This Tennessee staff is solid, the team is coming together. If it can be done in Arkansas...

2-3 years and it's going to be exciting to watch this group of young guys grow and get better. We just need some stability, something that's been seriously lacking the last 5 or so years....

Arkansas was in much worse shape as a program when Petrino came on board

1) Nutt just bolted for Ole Miss
2) He had phone records getting subpoenaed
3) Allegations of cheating with a news anchor
4) Banners being flown over the Stadium calling for his firing
5) Emails from his wife blasting his QB
6) A coach coming on board that bolted from his current team in season

It was chaos

The only difference is that Petrino had success as a head coach before he got the job at Arkansas. This is Dooley's first major HC job so there's not really any comparison.

Those things had the fans up in arms. They didn't have the team and program nearly as upset as did Kiffin bolting for the left coast.

I don't know that Coach Dooley will be as good of a coach as Bobby Petrino, but I feel really good about him. I do know that the Vols are in a better situation than Arkansas was three years ago when they were starting so many true freshmen.

Bobby Petrino was and is a proven coach with a winning record. Our current coach is neither. He is a guy with a losing record and has trouble getting the right number of players on the field. Arkansas is in MUCH better shape right now than Tennessee is. To say otherwise is just stupid.

Both of those could be true. Before this year, Mallett could only throw the long ball and tried to force everything even when it wasn't there.

Not sure what Bray's next three year's may bring, but he could be better before he leaves UT.

Petrino is a good coach, but he is also a horse's rear end.

Nobody is arguing that. I said that Tennessee is in better shape than Arkansas was three years ago and look at the Hogs now.

Maybe it was my TV, but Dooley looked cross eyed during the bowl game. Probably some special effects laid down by ESPN, cause you know they hate us...

Maybe that's why we couldn't get the correct # of players in several games in a row.

Petrino had just bolted from the Falcons with three games left in the season. He left them a note in the locker room and left town in the night.

He was looked upon as a flight risk and every coach in the SEC used it against him in recruiting. Houston Nutt was a preacher who had all of the players believing that they could walk on water. Petrino came in as a foul-mouthed jerk and several of the players were ready to walk out after the first meeting.

Petrino started 16 freshmen his first year. Tennessee had 16 who saw playing time this year, but not as starters.

The jury is still out on Coach Dooley, but THE PROGRAM is in better shape now than Arkansas was three years ago.

Arkansas has a savvy coach who is a big-time recruiter.

They're in far better shape than we are.

Yes or no? Did Petrino have a winning record in a BCS conf and a BCS bowl victory?
And does our current coach have either?
