I love poring over detailed analyses like this one. And if you haven't seen the piece it's based on, I highly recommend it:
The five factors: College football's most important stats - Football Study Hall

It's a bit early to hit the panic button just yet. Ohio State in 2014 struggled with a Navy team not as good as this App State outfit in Week 1 and lost to VT in Week 2 on the way to eventually winning the national championship. I'm not telling you to crown the Vols or anything, but recent history shows that a slow start doesn't necessarily mean doom. Besides, Texas A&M has also shown us the past two years that fast starts can mean nothing too.

However, it is eminently concerning that the Volunteer passing game is still more horizontal than vertical and couldn't get explosive plays on making guys miss. Most of the time, Tennessee's offense is either running the ball or using the pass as an extended run play. And not to take away anything from App State's skill and effort, but the mediocre-to-bad line play for the Vols is very worrying too. Last year's UT lines were sketchy, but this year they were supposed to be better thanks to the experience from a year ago. Nope. They're still sketchy.

Why are we even still talking about this game when we've got a historic game coming up this week. Yeah it was a tough game but let's move on.

The team went into panic mode because of minor mistakes, and Appy State being more aggressive than the players anticipated. Were we hoping the passing game would stretch things out? Yeah, but the line had Dobbs running for his life, so the coaches backed off to avoid an interception.

Not to put a religious spin on it, but some of the players need to repent of their sinful ways this week. And that might include players who did not line up for a play. The sideline reporters alluded to a lot of negative attitudes on the sidelines during the first half. At times like those, having some positive encouragement from someone you have broken a few gallons of sweat with means a lot.

The thing I found ironic was the SEC network playing the clip of Butch speaking to the players about being a mature competitor during the broadcast while we watched several individuals play who did not take that message to heart. I am sure Mike Leech would blame their fat little girlfriends. Whatever the case, this team needs to remember this game well, and do everything they can to not lose focus again.

Once that basic principle is put to action, maybe we can get a better feel for evaluating the plays called and other more advanced nuances.

This is the longest post game hangover I've felt in some time and we freaking won the game. I'm ready to sweat these Appy State toxins out and focus on V Tech.

The negative energy around here these last few days is starting to depress the hell out of me. Let's remember we are 1-0 and are 10 points favorites going into the largest Football game EVER. Forget last week and start getting pumped for this week Nation.
