Tennessee?s defensive talent at its peak

As of Monday, there was no longer reason to imagine what Tennessee's gifted defense might look like if it was together and healthy.
Every player on that side of the ball dressed out for Monday's first preseason practice, including all of the first-year players and all of the players who sat out the spring with injuries. Junior college transfer Jonathan Kongbo stepped into defensive line drills with two-time All-SEC pick Derek Barnett. Senior linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, sophomore defensive end Kyle Phillips, redshirt junior defensive tackle Kendal Vickers and a list of others were back after missing March and April.

This could be our best Defense since 2001 no sunshine pumping

Go Vols

You know who else....

Nah, I won't do it. Had fun with you last night Duncan. Thanks for doing the leg work on all these articles.

As for the D, I hope all the players are getting comfortable with the new schemes. I also hope there will be a very small learning curve as it sounds like there will mostly be tweaks on the system instead of a complete revamp like under Sunseri.
If the running game shows out and the passing game at least shows up, the defense should get enough rest to put the clamps down on opposing offenses through all four quarters.

The thing with Shoop is I think he makes learning easy. The reason I say this, look at his defensive production at his last two stops, his defenses were producing in year one under coach Shoop. That speaks volumes.. IMO

Yeah I think I remember reading back during the spring about his approach to installing his system. Basically in the spring he just wanted to teach fundamentals and some situational stuff and not worry too much about installing packages and whatnot. He said they can install packages formations and stuff pretty much on a week-by-week matchup-by-matchup basis as long as the players all know how to play and attack correctly.

That method of teaching seems to line up pretty well with the mentality he wants in his defenses to always be attacking.

I'm optimistic about Shoop. I want to see a lot more of this.

I had a blast to Hoss, and you are 100% right. I think the players take to Shoops playbook with ease and I expect them to excel because Shoop loves to attack and these kids are built just for that.

I think you'll see a lot more of bringing 5, 6 or 7 guys in exotic blitz packages. Should be fun.

The number of LB, corner and safety sacks going up would be nice. One of my favorite plays to see is a safety blasting into the backfield and ending the play in less than a second or two.

Yup I expect to see the 4-3 of a LeBeau D. Blitz early often and from every direction.

TK Jr could have multiple sacks.

Gaulden will have more I'd say. From what he looked like in spring and what we've heard from practice his whole time here it seems he's made for quick blitzes. Kelly should have a couple too though. I can't wait to see how many picks TKJr gets being a starter all season.

Not only does it appear Gaulden has great 1st step quickness and is excellent at pressure packages, but everybody that's watched him practice says he has bad intentions when he gets there.

Didn't a lot of reports from last spring say he was the hardest hitter on D? I remember reading/seeing that. Maybe in the war room?

He's not very big but he plays like it and is quick. JRM will lay the wood too. This gone B fun!
