NCAA rule book tests UT's patience | www.tennessean.com | The Tennessean

It kind of bugs me at the beginning because it seems to overreact to the secondary violations, but I like the quote by Tony Barnhardt at the end:

"My opinion is Lane Kiffin knew exactly what he was doing," CBS college football analyst Tony Barnhardt said. "I believe that as the new guy on the block, he knew that he had to take on the big dog — or the big Gator as it were — and he decided to do it."

The actual version in the newspaper also has a graphic in which Barnhardt says, "The downside to (Kiffin's comments) is if you go out and you get your doors blown off, the national media is going to have you for lunch. But I think he feels that is a risk worth taking. The upside is so much greater than the downside. We'll see how it pans out. I have a feeling that the University of Florida was going to be motivated to play the University of Tennessee regardless of what Lane Kiffin had to say."

The last sentence is my favorite.

kiffin knew what he was doing...classic motivation for his team that quit during some games last year.

Good or bad, its seems obvious to me that Kiffin is intentionally trying to create this stir. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the radio host remind him that he couldn't refer to unsigned recruits by name right before he committed the violation. There isn't any way that he didn't know that rule, and furthermore, there is no way that it could have slipped his mind given the situation.

Yes he knows the rules remember he only missed 1 question on the test. He playing the game.

Yup...only one question, not to shabby. Seems to me that queston was on the topic of talking about and the handling of recruits.

I have a really hard time with some assumptions and actually accusations of a few Tennessee fans and most all of the Vols' rivals that Kiffin is actually ignorant of the rules....You would think that Hamilton would have recognized through their interview if Kiffin was sort of slow....These secondary things happen all the time....Kiffin doesn't seem all that worried about it..Why??..I think it's all in his plan...Push the envelope and in the process get the Tennessee Volunteers name in the national spotlight....I agree with some of the other posters on here that we as fans are so used to the way that CPF did things that any little variance is a shock to our system...I personally like the fact that CLK didn't back down when CSS called him out...Kiffin shut him up seems to me...It doesn't bother me at all that Kiffin is not backing down from from CUM...Meyer & Foley acted like spoiled little brats by "telling on" on Kiffin...When did we as fans start worrying about making Florida mad??...Kiffin didn't run to the SEC when Spurrier publicly doubted/questioned his knowledge of the rules...I have seen on other threads that Kiffin was an "utter failure" at Oakland...Really??...He won five games with them and they were actually playing better..That's saying something with that garbage, joke of an organization...It's almost comical that some Vol fans are actually taking Al Davis' side on the firing of Kiffin...Folks, Al Davis is a LUNATIC....

Anyway....Time will tell with Kiffin...Let's see him coach some games and see if the effort & heart of the players is greatly improved and see if the gameplan puts the Vols in a position to be the aggressors instead of sitting back and waiting for something to happen before they start trying to play....

I think that it is more likely that he knows what he doing with the recruiting than it is that he doesn't. I've heard more about our team this off season than any I can remember. You have to think that possible recruits have also heard about this young coach shaking things up.

You may just be on to something here.

The one thing I like is that the news stories being released on UT aren't due to players getting DUI's, getting caught with marijuana, etc. like they were in the past.

publicity is publicity on matter if it is what one perceives as good or bad. getting the universities name out there on a daily basis is a good thing imo. the more you hear about something the more inquisitive you become about it. i say CLK should keep it up to get a buzz flying around about the school like in days past so that young recruits will want to see what all the fuss is about. and besides, who the hell realy care what the gators and bammers think about us.
