The Volunteers won't practice today, they'll be doing community service and visiting various hospitals. That leaves ten days before Georgia.

I don't know what can or will be improved in that time. Honestly, I don't know what drills you run to make folks play the game on instinct and full throttle.

I'm encouraged that the offense had some throws that went a little deeper than ten yards. I'm encouraged that the offensive line seems to be starting to learn run blocking. It was nice to see mssrs. Creer and Moore get on the field. Erik Ainge's senior season will not now get the credit it should. 59-20 will tarnish the legacy of a man who wound up being a fine volunteer. No matter what the rest of the season holds.

John Chavis needs ten weeks. Ten days will have to do.

Kudos to the defensive line for, I think, playing better than anyone here really thought they would before the season. I'm not blind to their gaffes, but honestly, look what they are doing it with up there.

Linebackers may be the reason another poster said Chavis was looking very dejected in VolWalk Saturday. He must be pulling his hair out trying to get these guys to the level everyone thought they already were at. Of all the wrongs so far, that LB play is a concern is the most perplexing thing on the team.

Ten days can do a world of good for a now very young secondary. Game film to look at for these kids will be invaluable. Expect to see this group continue to rise up to the competition.

What I saw Saturday was not much different than what I saw the previous weeks. Well, we snagged a win.

Demonte' Bolden said Saturday, "I hate losing. I didn't come to Tennessee to lose." I like the fire in that kid, and that he's willing to express it. Reminds me of a linebacker named Wilson.

There are ten days to light a fire under this team.

Tick tock.

Great post. Can we learn to tackle and play special teams in 10 days? :ermm:

I think thats what kills us most is tackles and special teams. 10 days I dont think will help that much but who knows..

I just don't know OWH. another fine post though. Chavis definitely needs to jump in the way back machine and go back to spring practice and start all over with the LB's and secondaries. I'm not pleased with the line myself, but I guess i see what you are saying. I think the horrible LB play just helps cover up some of the lines mistakes.

Hopefully Ainge's pinky can get even better over the next 11 days and our receivers can figure out better routes and better moves that create separation so we can spread the field and hopefully open up the run game some more. But I don't see our o-line creating any holes no matter what happens and no matter who's back there.

I'm thinking Vinson can really benefit from practicing full time at db for the next 10 days. He seems like he has potential.

Your dead on about the linebackers. They haven't been as good as advertised. The only excuse i can come up for them is this. With noone on the line to demand a double team, the linebackers are being taken out of the play by a lineman getting to them when they shouldn't. That's the only thing i can think of that explains the horrid play. Really though who here thought ryan karl was a top notch sec linebacker anyway. He was a weak link before the season started. Mayo, for whatever reason is nowhere to be found when a running back breaks through the line and bust one up the middle. Overall the front seven is less than average for sec standards.

The Linebackers and kick coverage teams are the two biggest problems so far. Is it a coincidence that a lot of the same players make up both units? Mayo and McCoy seem to be very undisciplined, over pursue, and are out of position on all the long runs against us. They freewheel instead of playing their gaps. Karl should be our special teams ace a la Bill Bates but nothing more. I would like to see Wilson get more time in the middle, with Mayo moving back outside where he can make more plays and rush the passer. In these ten days, they need to hold tackling practice all day long. Go Vols!

Short of tackling drills and kick/punt coverage practice for 4 hours a day im not sure what can be done in 10 days.

the fact that we have Ryan Karl as one of the best LBs on our team sums up why we're having defensive struggles. He's a great kid and he knows football, but he's not even CLOSE to the quality that we've known for many years. Even during the early 90s with Darrell Hardy and Jeremy Lincoln, they were better than what we have now. I believe that Mayo and McCoy are good LBs, but Ryan Karl is just in there because he's a dang senior. I wish we would just get some athletes in the game.

The success on any linebacking corps is in direct correlation to the success their defensive line has. In order for our linebackers to be successful, the defensive line has to plug gaps, pressure the QB, and draw double teams. There's a reason Al Wilson and company had so much success way back when. Save the 4 sacks we had the other night, I haven't seen any of that this year. It doesn't help that Eric Berry is the only one that seems to be able to tackle at this point... which is sad considering he just got to Knoxville. I'm not saying our line backers are great but with the defensive line getting man-handled every week, it puts a lot of undo stress for our linebackers to carry the defense and it ain't happening. Did anyone else notice that when Cal and Fla. decided to run, the backs were hitting the line 3-4 yards down the field almost every time? You're not gonna win games like that.
