I always like to look at these but certain positions are far more important than others and if you don’t have a good leader at QB who is also pretty talented, the team will underperform. And overall team chemistry can make a team play at a higher level than the sum of their parts. I look at the players we had when JG was QB (And Butch coaching) - we squandered a lot of talent.Interesting seeing where Tennessee rates based on roster & recruiting rankings. Maybe our coaches can develop players after all.
I totally agree with this. The recruiting services are not reliable and mostly opinions.Recruiting rankings are great for players you've never seen play. Once guys get on campus and start playing they mean little. For example, our best player Dylan Sampson was just a 3-star. I wouldn't trade him for any RB on Alabama or Georgia.
If they re-rated players the way they do transfers then these rankings might mean something. Right now all they give you is an approximation of how talented a team is. They're not gospel.
Heupel’s roster is made up entirely without 1 player from the 2021 recruiting class (Pruitt’s last/Heupel’s first) being a contributor. Only one player from that signing class ever started consistently & that was Jaylen Wright. Pretty amazing results considering a complete strike out in 1 recruiting classThe next step for CJH will be elevating the overall talent level into the top 10, and I think he’s on his way to doing it. As soon as you point out that our talent level is not close to Georgia’s, for example, the “stars aren’t everything” mob comes out. The truth is that there is still a talent gap between Tennessee and the elite teams. CJH is competing (for the most part) with elite teams while having less talent. I think we won’t be losing to teams like Arkansas once he’s upgraded the roster. In order to do it, we can’t be losing guys like David Sanders tho.
And maybe just a little bit is our coaches know a little more about talent than the recruiting so called experts. Some star gazers often automatically take the rating at face value. Often times coaches have more insight and know the complete person like whether the kid has a good attitude and does well in school or is he dedicated to working hard in the off season etc. Many factors that we never see or hear much about. GBODon’t forget how our commits always drop once they commit to us. I wonder if that same thing happens in this rating system with our current players?
Y’all know it is real. We aren’t being paranoid if they *really are* out to get us.
It’s also worth noting that the 247 local guys we know and read on another Vols site have nothing to do with player rankings and evaluations. That is all done by another group at 247 totally unrelated to the guys who cover all the different schools.
