Team Speed?

I believe to win in the SEC you need dominant play on the lines. I think Dooley has recruited well for the offensive line, even though the oldest player starting is from Louisiana like the Honey Badger but has a personality more like Winnie the Pooh.

Our defensive line still needs upgrades as we all know. I hope we close with a D Tomlinson or Kirven etc.

My concern is with team speed.

Dooley came in and the staff was sad to find very little top tier SEC speed. They recruited Evander Wells from the track team because they did not have a single burner on the squad who they thought could return kicks. When he tore his knee up, it made certain we would have to wait a year.

We then recruited Devrin Young, people knocked him, he came in and showed that he has good quickness and speed both but was not dominant in the way some SEC seniors were as a true freshman and so some complained about him.

Blanc looks really fast. Alton Howard is silly fast. Who are the other burners in the class who are an upgrade to current team speed? I get concerned when we have WR's who run a 4.8 40. That is not going to get it done.

I want AJ to move to MLB, but that is where I see Santos dominating as well, and neither of them will put up a blazing 40.

Some of the corners look fast. We still do not have a single RB who could beat a 230 pound Jamal Lewis in a foot race. I am not saying everyone needs to be Lamarcus Coker fast, but I am aching for the kind of talent that saw an NFL RB playing FB at TN.

When we played Arkansas, I would say they had 4 or 5 guys who were faster than anyone we have. Will this incoming freshman group help catch us up? Will 4 or 5 of them become half of the top 10 fastest players on the team from the time they arrive on campus?

An easy way to think about this is by asking "what would their speed be rated as in a video game?"

I want a Bo Jackson in Tecmo kind of player on the team.

Bo and LT's speed in Tecmo bowl was crazy. Just be the Raiders or Giants and you win.

We have a handful of 4.4 guys in this class and Quenshaun Watson and Daniel Gray are rumored to have 4.3 speed. If Hunter comes back 100% he's a 4.3 guy and Devrin looked the part of a speed demon. I think we're starting to get some really good speed on this team.

Who is this 4.8 WR you talk about?

I think we are upgrading in speed this year and should return 2 speed guys in Hunter and Young. Getting lots of elite atheletes will take us winning a good amount of games next year. I would like a fast back, but I am itching to see one who is more of a bulldozer. I want a guy who will get low and break a tackle. I still can't understand how we don't try handing the ball to Fugate. Maybe they have in practice and it didn't work, but that guy is a big tough runner who ran for a ton of yard in HS. Why not try it? Nothing else is working. He is not going to smoke anyone, but he might bust some heads while getting postive yards.

There aren't many Bo Jackson's on the planet as of ever! He reportedly clocked a 4.12 40 time, but Bo also had great vision and power. Deion Sanders ran a 4.21 in 89 combine and Donte' Stallworth has been clocked at 4.22. Ahmad Carrol ran a 4.23 if I remember right and Joey Galloway ran a 4.18. Coker's time is 4.28 low and averages 4.38 or 37. Anyways, there are some players with exceptional speed but having vision and being able to change direction is what makes a great back or receiver, not just speed. The difference between a 4.1 and a 4.5 if it were a footrace to the finish line is not a lot of separation. When I think of speed at Tennessee I think of Willie Gault. When I think of someone who knew how to adjust and change direction I think of Donte' Stallworth. Next year I'll be thinking Justin Hunter!

Alton Howard hopefully is the answer. He looks ridiculously fast on tape. It's been a while since we've had someone who could play that home runner hitter at RB.

We'll have plenty of speed at WR next season with Hunter back.

Pig isn't a RB at all. He's a WR all the way. Wish people would realize that. I don't want a little back running into the teeth of a Bama defense with those big backers anyways. Did you see what happened to Rainey and Demps when they played Bama? They were getting racked up.

It also has a lot to do with the o-line. I mean it's not like we're recruiting exclusively to beat alabama's front seven. There are plenty of other teams a burner back would help with. Also, no one runs well against alabama or LSU, not matter how elite. Just like how they have front sevens filled with future pros, you'd need a future pro-filled o-line to run against them.

If you can't beat those teams in the trenches you won't be winning many games against them. Who else has beat them besides Florida? What happened when were upsetting LSU? We were winning in the trenches. You won't beat them by lining up and letting them tee off on your QB. Ask Arky about it.

Then we need to beat them with gutsy receivers, a solid O-line that can quell their pass rush, and a QB that can stand and deliver. I agree that we need a more than solid run game but the way this years recruit class is working out - it's going to be speed, and physical speed that CDD is going after. Our O-line is more than capable against most rush D's in a pass set. The part we are lacking is that our O-line is too friendly. IMO, they just need to get ugly and mean, mentally mean. When things are clicking this group can throw on anybody. I don't give two squats if it's LSU or bummer, we can throw on them. DaRick, Pig, or Bowles over the middle, Hunter and Croom on the outside, give Bray the time he needs and he's going to hit. Okay,,,a bit drunk here,,,need a timeout.

I doubt we have any WR that run a 4.8. Hunter, Arnett and the Rogers brothers are blazing fast.

Whew!!! I just woke up and tired already. A rant in search of a thought. I guess a summary would be to fire Dooley and Chaney, and need a running game and kicker.

Wouldn't it be great to fire the coaching staff and start all over again? Brilliant.

It is hard to tell how fast someone is and the staff knows better than me etc.

Recorded camp times for one wr recruit are slower than I ran in college and I am not that fast.

I would anticipate if we get q davis this guy may be crossed off our recruiting class.

AJ Johnson isn't fast for an OLB, but I would say he is fast for a MLB.

Hopefully Lathers will be back to full health, he was pretty fast before his injury.

Randolph played really fast from his S position too.

This can come from so many other ways than what a stop watch says....

Film
reaction
football intelligence
play diagnosis
angles
etc.....
