Looking at conference games only over the past 9 years, nobody's given up more yards per game than Tennessee this season. I wasn't able to find SEC-only stats prior to 2008 but given that offenses are considerably more prolific now than ever before, it's probably safe to say that we've made history in the worst way this year.

2008-16: Most yards given up in SEC play (season, per game)
1. 536.0 Tennessee 2016
2. 512.4 Missouri 2016
3. 511.1 Texas A&M 2016
4. 509.5 Texas A&M 2014
5. 499.1 Texas A&M 2013
6. 490.1 Tennessee 2012
7. 482.9 Arkansas 2016
8. 475.9 Mississippi State 2016
9. 475.3 Arkansas 2012
10. 472.9 Vanderbilt 2010

To be honest, Arkansas' defense this year is probably worse than ours (giving up 7.87 yards per play in SEC games compared to our 6.86), but SEC offenses ran 150 more plays against us in the same number of games.

Even uglier...

Most yards given up by UT defense (single game)
1. 740 Missouri 2016
2. 721 Troy 2012
3. 687 Oregon 2013
4. 635 Kentucky 2016
5. 634 Kentucky 1997
6. 625 South Carolina 2014
7. 618 Washington State 1988
8. 608 Vanderbilt 2016
9. 594 Alabama 2016
10. 592 Texas A&M 2016

So do injuries explain all of that mess? Something has to change and quick.

For me it will always be Sunseri's 2012 defense. I'll take it at face value. Stats don't tell the whole story

Certainly no stats to back this statement,JMO, but I've been watching the Vols for 50 seasons, played safety for 10 years and I do not think there has been a worse defence take the field in an Orange shirt, including Sunseri's in 2012.

At least Martinez needs to be replaced and whoever coaches linebackers! Our DB's are terrible and linebackers are underdeveloped.
Maybe Shoop needs to hire his defensive staff.
