School system says students told to expect prank - Nashville, Tennessee - Monday, 05/14/07 - Tennessean.com

This has received significant press today in mid-TN. I can recall counselors at summer camp pulling similar stunts when I was a camper. I do not recall anything like this happening in a school activity setting but I do recall some mischevious teachers over the years. I'm just not sure what to make of this. Is it innocent fun that was badly timed in light of recent events, or does this kind of stuff just not fly anymore?

Obviously the VA Tech massacre only being a month ago makes it spectacularly ill-timed, but unfortunately the fact that school shootings have become so commonplace means that I just don't think you can go there anymore. The teachers have got to know that some people are going to freak out about it. There are plenty of other ways they could give the students a good scare without having to go that route.

This was incredibly poor judgment on the part of these school officials. While this may have been considered a harmless prank back when most of us were school (due to the complete absence of school shootings back then), in the current environment this is absolutely inexcusable.

I'm just glad no one decided to pop a nuke for practice while we were doing the old duck and cover during the Cuban missile crisis.

I think they ought to fire every last one of the idiots.

Parents met at the school over the weekend to discuss the incident, which frightened many of the children and brought some to tears.

According to a statement released late Sunday by the district, the students had been anticipating a prank such as had been done to previous sixth-grade campers. Most of the students, the statement said, stood up after the trick, exchanged high fives and said, “That was a good one. Yeah, you got me.”

Seems like the kids are the only ones with a firm grasp of reality. The faculty should have known that they would catch flak from a bunch of limp wristed parents, and the parents are acting like your typical California types.

Limp wristed parents? Come on . . . that was an incredibly stupid move on the faculty's part. If somebody pulled a stunt like that on your kid a month after a student massacre, you'd be livid.

This has become a national story now. I see what they were trying to do but it wasn't very smart on thier part to say the very least.

Teachers should act like role-models. Period. If a kid had pulled that prank he/she'd have been suspended indefinitely. I say the "teachers" involved should be fired. A field trip is still a school function and school conduct rules should be observed.

Good lord.
